What's the secret ( Firing it up )?

Just bought a Bayliner with an 85HP Force. It runs great, but I haven't found the secret on how to start it (COLD). I've tried holding in the key (choke) for a second or two. Tried holding the choke on continuously. Only after 2 or 3 min of cranking, the motor starts. After warm up, it starts immediately. Even after the cold start it runs smooth - no spittin or missing. Would appreciate help, as one of these times I probably will kill the battery. (The motor started cold, immediately for the previous ower, which leads me to believe the choke is probably working)
Any ideas would be appreciated - John

Do you make sure the primer bulb is pumped up and remains hard before you crank it?

Push the botton at the bottom of the throttle lever (IF there is not a botton there, then pull the lever toward the center of the boat) (This dis-engages the gears) push the throttle lever about 1/4 - 1/2 while you are cranking and HOLD the choke until it fires.

Craig

If none of the above suggestions work, try taking the cover off, and spraying alittle premix in the carbs, (don't use starter fluid or Aerostart) and try again.. if it fires up straight way, there is something wong with your fuel delivery..

rgds

Frank

Re: What's the secret ( Firing it up )?

I found I wasn't pumping the bulb enough on my big motor. I was used to my 14' jon with a 9.8hp and about 3 to 4 squeezes of the bulb. When I moved up to a Merc 150 (no, not on the 14' jon :) ), I have to squeeze it maybe 7 or 8 times till its firm. Also, figuring out the "disengage gear" button help to.

BL...

(1) Disconect fuel line at carburetor, and see if fuel flows freely when primer bulb is squeezed. If no fuel,or little fuel. primer bulb check valve, fuel petcock,or fuel line may be faulty, and make sure your vent cap is open.
(2) check your choke, if your choke sticks open it will make hard starting.

THESE CHECK ITEMS are out of clymers manual
for FORCE o/b motors.Don't know if you've checked these items but there worth looking into.

My brother bought a boat last year ,had trouble getting it started, ended up the vent cap was plugged. ;)

MTH54-Pink at night sailors delight, Pink in the morning sailors take warning!
