What's The Secret ???

I'm trying to hook up my "new" outboard. 1984 Evinrude 25hp elect/long/remote. I cannot get the steering connector into both holes. One yes, but not the other. There just isn't enough clearance to allow the connector to lift and drop into the end of the steering cable.

I checked with the PO and he sez yup, that's the rod he used when he had motor on his toon.

Any thoughts on this problemo ????

Nevermind. I checked the rude parts and the steering connector I have is not the factory part. B.O.A.T.............................in this case it's another hundred. Plus shipping.............Plus waiting.......................we were suppossed to get wet this week. Plus waiting....................

This thing is stainless steel. Can't bend it. Maybe I can cut one threaded end down enough to slip in. hmmmmm...........

They do make about a hundred different arms.

But try this....will the angles work/
First make sure that the holes work...is the thing too big or too small

If the holes work run the cable about half way out and put the steering cable end on first, then slightly move the engine and cable to align

I seem to remeber that you need an extender on the engione for this application...I think

OK lets get everything set correctly, turn the steering wheel all the way to one side. now turn it all the way back. count the turn. now count back to center the steering wheel. now center the motor. should fit, if not you have the link arm for a larger hp motor.

Should look like this. Turn the wheel to extend the ram all the way out and if should flex enough to get the link arm in the hole.

As usual, I get great responses to my questions. Thank you all very much.

I'm going to concentrate on this steering issue this morning. I'm into the 3rd week of no smoking so the frustration tolerance level is down to minus zero.
But, gotta git er done.

good luck on the no smoking and watch out for pinched fingers . also if the nut is stainless and the arm is alum. dont use an impact wrench to tighten , they will weld together!

OK............Got it connected. I took the bolts off of one end of the assembly arm, put the other end into the ram hole, turned the motor a bit until holes lined up with the arm and the motor and stuck a bolt into the hole. Smacked it a few times and all is well. Give me a smoke. A cigar. A pipe. Of course now my steering is frozen. Disconnected the whole damn thing. Steering still frozen. Called the boat shop and they are expecting the beast tomorrow morning. I'm done messing with thing. Son is visiting for 2 weeks just before the 4th and he wants to go fishing in my restored boat. Don't have any more time to waste trying to do stuff myself. I've been treading in unexplored territory for far too long. Told the guy at the boat shop; just fix it. I still have some checks left, can't be broke yet.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me out on this issue. I just have far too much on my plate right now to mess with this motor. Have to prepare for a family reunion (at my home) the first weekend in August and I'm still busting but on the landscaping and etc etc etc etc etc.

Not no more. And, I don't think you want me to share my thoughts on where she is now nor for whom she works.

Could have stayed where she was doing some good. Bet she won't get her work week cut.......................................................................
