Hi am new to this forum and fairly new to boats. I just picked up a 1996 Four Winns Horizon 200 that has a 302 5.0L. Am wondering what's te top speed suppossed to be on this boat its all stock and the stock prop is 21 pitch!
Thanks for any help. (Am guessing I posted on the right section?)

welcome to iboats! should run in the low to mid 50s at 4600rpm with a light load. weight is a big factor in speed on that the boat.

I would guess somewhere between 48-55 MPH. There are a lot of factors that affect speed; wind, weight, water condition, ect.

Pretty optimistic estimates given above. You can get all the performance specs for this and many other Four Winns boats on their website.

Your boat: 44-47 mph at WOT. Assuming you have 190HP 5.0L
If you have 220HP 5.0L the top speed is 46-49 mph at WOT.

You won't see 50mph+ unless you had the 265HP 5.8L engine

What is the RPM rating for that motor and what are you achieving ? 21 pitch seems high to me for that setup.

Re: Whats the top speed suppossed to be?

Given the year of the boat, I'd say expect mid 40's.

21 pitch seems high to me for that setup.

When I got the boat it had a mirage p23, which am guessing is a 23 pitch, but also the boat was not going pass 30 mph. I got looking into it and throttle body was only opening 3/4th of the way. I adjusted it so it did open all the way and gained almost 1000 rpm's and took the boat to almost 40mph maybe 39. I spoke to a friend that's in the boat business and he said that maybe since the throttle body was not opening all the way the previous owner changed prop to compensate. The boat did have what am guessing is a stock prop (aluminum) in the boat which is a 21 pitch. Also since I adjusted the throttle body and ran WOT rpm's were around 5500/5700 which I know is high. Any suggestions on what prop I should run? Am into jetskis and in them the lower the number on the prop the more whole shot, but less top end, is this the same for boats? And thanks for all the responses.

Re: Whats the top speed suppossed to be?

The stock prop that came from the factory on your boat was a 14.25 x 21p. You can look up this information yourself anytime on the Four Winns website.

yes, but... You need to prop for the target RPM's at WOT. If you aren't hitting those, or are too high, you need to re-prop to get there. Running too low is just as bad if not worse than too high even! There are other tricks you can play to change RPM other than pitch that will affect your takeoff vs topspeed. (# of blades, and to a lesser extent, diameter)

You are looking in the wrong place. Customer Service/Owners Manuals/Year & Model It would also be helpful to know which HP engine you have.

^^^+2^^^ Sounds like the PO went to the 23p to lower the max RPM's.
You need a good tach., GPS, and find your gear ratio in order to get some good numbers.

Prop Slip Calculator

Get the good numbers then find a good local prop shop. A good prop man is an artist and will set you up with several props to try. (Most of the time the first setup will work the best)

Lets face it, the 90's hulls compared to today were not built for speed. Getting 50 mph on that hull will be tuff and will run thru the gas. :blue:
What they do, is give you, quick on plane, good ride/handling, a big sweet spot for cruising, and that gives you long legs. :D

Running 28-3600 rpm's will get you in the 30's mph and hours on the water. Running alone or with friends/family, cruising, tubing, fishing, etc. your boat will handle it all with ease. Just a good all around boat.
Nice buy. :D

The only thing I've found so far is WOT rpm's which says between 4400/4800

Then it's 220 HP. No matter what HP, the prop that Four Winns put on the boat in 1996 when it left the factory was a 14.25 x 21p 3 blade aluminum, as I mentioned before. That prop gives you the best overall performance for your boat.

Thanks for the help and the link. I took the 23p off and put the stock aluminum one on, now I have to re-test. I will also GPS the speed.
Thanks
