Re: Whats the top speed suppossed to be?

Ok took boat out this morning. Ran with stock prop, 2 ppl, half a tank gas and nothing else. Water was like glass and GPS was 45.1 WOT at 4500 rpm's. It came out the water nice and got on plane quick. Very happy with the results. Thanks to everyone who pointed me in the right direction and advise.
Thanks
Dre

What is the RPM rating for that motor and what are you achieving ? 21 pitch seems high to me for that setup.

Nah, I run a stainless 21p on my 4.3L. 23p would be over propped.

Dre, if you get a stainless 21px14.25 you will get +5mph and a stronger hole shot. AL props flex a lot. :) Look for one over the winter on ebay.

So I should get same size as the stock prop, but in SS for a better whole shot and added speed?

In a word, YES, but lots of variables before you lay down big bucks for a new prop.
You still need your gear ratio to find your prop slip. Then post the results in the " Prop Questions and Topics " . Lots of help, from people who know tons more than me.
AL props are commonly considered to run -1 when compared to SS. So your AL is a 20. The SS Mirage p23 (very good prop) that the OP bought was a BIG jump.

"good local prop shop" you will need one sooner or later.
They will do trades. :D

That has been my experience... I was +5 with mine on both boats and it pulls harder without flexing. Stay away from the rocks though! ;)

I would not expect both better top speed and better hole shot. Typically, when going to SS with the same pitch, hole shot suffers due to the lower flex. Also, +5 MPH is a HUGE expectation. I am not disputing Volphin's experience, but his is not typical unless you are further off with the original. Your original is working well. I believe in always carrying two props, so you should look into another.

AL props do in fact flex, which improves hole shot if all else is equal ;)

I'll add that most of the improved performance of the SS prop comes from superior design.... they put more engineering into a prop that sells for $500 than one that sells for $100

a slight bit comes from better efficiency of a thinner blade... flex has much less to do with it than many people thing
