Whats this part called and what can I do about fuel leaking from it?

Hello all,

I am attempting to track down and fix several problems with my outboard. It is a 1985 OMC Seadrive 1.6L Powerhead on a johnson 115 mid and lower. I have a steady drip leak of fuel coming from the part detailed in the attached photo. It drips a fairly large drop about every 2 seconds at idle. Fuel leaking.jpg

What is this part and what can I do to get it to stop leaking. I attempted to tighten the part. Unfortunately, It seemed about as tight as it wanted to get. I also couldn't lossen the part easily. I am afraid to put to much "muscle" into it because I don't want to break it off and create more problems for myself.

Thanks
Scott

Hey Scott. What I normally do is back the screw out a few turns, and put some fuel line sealant on the threads, then tighten her back up. It will fill in any voids in the threads. I used permetex aviation gasket sealer from advanced auto, about $8.

Hmm, yes and no. No way to know without feeling it. Just be easy on her, all you need is a few threads, you dont need to pull the whole thing out.

Pete,
I was able to get it to thread back some, it was tough at first then it got easier. I also think there was a crack in the hose going to the nipple. I will make a fresh cut and attach after the sealant is applied to the threads. Should there be some sort of clamp or nylon tie to secure the hose to that nipple?
Thanks
Scott

If the old hose has a split, don't bother to cut it off and refit it. Replace it with new! A fire on the boat while on the water is something you don't want any part of. Gasoline safety is extremely important. New hose does not cost that much, even if it is a formed hose that must be purchased from the manufacturer.
We like everybody on the forum, don't want to hear about a burned boat.
