JamNJ - just for the record the Chevelle is a 350 with a four speed - metallic blue with white stripes and a black interior and 56,000 original miles. I had it longer than I've had my wife!!

Stinky2,you say you seen a bayliner sink because of no hose clamp on the bildge pump.that could happen to any boat.thatis not the fault of the boat it is a
screw up on the part of maintence provider!!imho
ken

Wow Stinky...you impress me so much with all your experience. You've seen it more times than you wish, huh? It's just a common occurance, huh? And what amazes me the most? That Bayliner is still in business. That Brunswick is still in business. I mean, there MUST be litigation over all the boats filling with water and rolling over. How do they ever survive?

ENOUGH ALREADY!!! I'm sorry I posted this issue in the first place! I was just trying to get a feel for the brand at large. Its a WAY moot point. Its a nice, serviceable boat and gets me and my family on the lake that we would otherwise never get to enjoy. Period!!!

Awesome dude...70 replys, I just bought an 1989 Bayliner 1950 BR with 5.0 L Chevy and Cobra OMC. Bought a good boat for a great price and it needs a little bit of TLC. What the hell do you expect for a 18 year old boat, I like it the kids love it and I'm on the water! I hope you get as much support for the things you'll really need help with, as you would with any boat. ENJOY!

Purduebarry-
I applaud you on the first real response that makes sense (although a few others seemed supportive and understanding). You hit the nail on the head, what do you expect for a 16yr old boat. Go buy a used car for five grand and see what you get!
You're exactly right, I expect to put a little TLC and some maintenance into it but, guess what, I end up with a large boat that will provide me, the family, and lots of friends with a blast whenever I'm in the mood. Seems like a good deal to me...I don't care who made the damn thing.

Purduebarry-
And another thing <:)
I can get OMC parts all day long from a variety of sources. So much for the trashing of OMC being out of business. They don't make Oldsmobiles anymore, either, or Neons, or Ramchargers.....

Greg, think you can get an OMC coupler? Think again. I know marine mechanics who have been waiting two years for one...there's an aftermarket company that will tool up and make a bunch once there are enough orders. But till then....backorder city, and your boat sits on blocks.

And that's just one part.

Don't know the whole story but a local boat dealer told me recently that the parent company to Bombardier 4 wheelers has purchased OMC and he was hoping this would make a difference on getting parts. I, too, have a Bayliner that was cheap to get and cheap to operate and maintain. My family has as much fun as anyone else on the water that has boats that cost an arm and leg. Enjoy and make your own decision!

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

I have heard of all the Rumors about Bayliners, rolling, splitting and all the other stuff. So when an oprotunity came along to by an 86 Cierra 2550.I spent two weeks surfing the web to see if I could find any credible evidence to support the rumors and I found nothing. So I bought the boat.Funny thing is the boat was tied up on the Ct.River and last month the river experienced the worst flooding in 20 years.10 feet higher than normal. The marina where my new purchase was tied up was wiped out. Some boats sank right there.Others snapped their lines and cleats and went over the dam.Mine floated up right and took on a total of 1 gallon of water in the bilge. As to the construction not being that good,I dont know all I know is the slip to which I was tied up ended up looking like a A frame structure pinned up against my boat, and there was not so much as a gouge on the gel coat. So,please to all you Bayliner Bashers if you can point me to some credible evidence or consumer site then please do so.If not please get a life.

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

Guys please keep bashing the darn boats. PLEASE!

I might want another 1 later and if the people find out they are actually ok boats the price will go up!!!

Personally I bought my 88 because when the Wife and I got married I told her I wanted a boat. We looked at a few and the Bayliner looked great to me at that time. To bad money was so tight we had none. :D

Now we has some. :) (ebonics is funny eh? )

What did I buy? An 88 bayliner like I saw 15 years ago. While its true i had to rebuild it the hull stringers and Transom were fine the motor works well too only the floor was rotted.

As to turning over I doubt it! There is so much foam its a wonder it does not sink from that! BTW I used 22 Cubic Ft and I had removed and did not replace the 2 Cubes under the seats! Thats on a 17 ft boat that caculates to needing only 16.

I hit the dock at 10 mph and yes there was a scratch but it did not split. WOT over 4 ft waves hurts but did not crack. I musta got a bad boat. :D

So please keep up the bashing I need my cheap### Bayliners to restore.

OH and to answer the question there are some bad Bayliners just as there are bad other boats.

Also the real reason is if you spend 25,000 on a new boat and your neighbor got the equivalent Bayliner for 18,000 you'd bash it too. :)

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

Let me add to the fray. I picked up our 89 2755 Sunbridge for $5,500.00. Former owners had sorely neglected minor maintenance items until they piled up to be overwhelming and decided to unload it cheap. With lots of elbow grease and some cash I'm getting a very nice boat. It's a sharp-looking boat that catches everyone's eye. A couple with an 86 Sea-Ray ~26' pulled up next to us at the pump-out at Hall's Crossing and his eye's were only on my boat - he commented on how good it looked. I thought his looked just as good if not better, but he preferred mine. We see that on McPhee a lot - everyone wants to get close and take a long look at it. Unfortunately, all I see is all of the little imperfections that I need to fix. Anyway, we got a great-looking boat for not much money and we have a great time with it on the water. Sure I'd like to have a Scarab, or something really sleek like that, but until I win the lottery this will do just fine.

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

It really seems that what is really behind all this Bayliner Bashing is the fact that many have fallen prey to these rumors by going out and buying much more expensive boats than they needed to.After this the rumor must be perpetuated to maintain the viability of the Myth that Bayliners are bad boats. If for no other reason than to continue in the state of self-deception that the move based upon rumor was a smart one.Kind of reminds about what my daughter did last night. She paid $9.50 to go see a "Fifty Cent" movie.Show me your proof that Bayliner is inferior ;)

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

My father bought a 92 221/2 foot Bayliner cuddy with a Merc 5.7litre 260hp Alpha one, He gave his 1988 19ft Wellcraft Classic to my brother. This bayliner is in like new condition I could hardly believe it until I saw it for myself and drove it, boat is shiny and solid interior is mint, the hour meter is showing 432hrs. Granted this boat is not his old or my current Wellcraft in comparsion but it does have good power and does not feel like it will come apart from beneath you, its a very roomy and nice looking boat, Its not my style of boat but for my father who is 59yrs young and single and generally only gets to boat 5 or 6 times a year it was the best condition boat he could find for under 10,000 CDN he actually paid $7300 for it with a tandem Eagle trailer under it to boot this boat has been very well cared for and it show's. I will not bash any boat on the water I have my Wellcraft Eclipse and it makes me happy, other people have different brands and it makes them happy...

Re: What's Up With All the Bayliner Bashing??

I own a 1989 Bayliner Trophy 2103 with twin Force 85' and live on a saltwater canal. The Bayliner has been the perfect fishing boat.
1) I never spend a dime on anything other than impellers and new batteries.
2) It always starts.
3) It is small enough for bay and big enough for gulf

All my neighbors bash bayliner and they bash Force even harder. But my boat is the only one on the canal that has never needed repairs. Most of the neighbors have gone through two boats and/or two engines in same timeframe. My immediate south neighbor is the biggest basher. He likes to think of himself as having higher standards than most when it comes to boating. He likes his boats big and fancy with lots of creature comforts. His third boat since I moved here just got towed in last week. The salt-water tore up his inboard exhaust. Mine still starts. Yeah, he still bashes Baylner/Force. But frankly, we both know that he is jealous of my maintenance record. He's spent well over $100,000 and I've spent a few hundred. My boat runs and his doesn't. So, okay .. bash away. While you call a mechanic me and my bayliner are going to be out fishing.
