I just filled up my dodge for $96.60 @ 3.27 per gallon. Today I see it at the same station for 2.57 per gallon.

That kind of change in two days does not make any kind of sense to me..

Re: Whats with fuel prices???

not that big of drop here but it has come down. Diesel is what has dropped here. Beginning of the week it was $3.40 Thursday it dropped to 2.99 a gallon.

I filled up friday at BP @2.35. Diesel there was 3.49. Several private dumps came by to fill up with diesel but I told them about the price at Marathon being 2.99. They thanked me and one guy gave me 5 bucks for letting him know. He said that info just saved him $150 for his fill up.

What gets me all the stations are within a few cents of each other except the diesel. Marathon is usually 30 to 40 cent difference under the others.

So supply and demand changed enough in a couple days for a $0.70 change?

The correct answer is gouging.

Most likely a few executives noticed they were close to making record profits this quarter. They decided to jack up the prices to make that record number. Now that they've made it they're putting them back down for a few months to keep people from buying more fuel efficient cars, and then they'll do it again.

I wonder if a news article I saw about people and congress getting fed up with the high prices/very high profits might have anything to do with the drastic reduction in the price. Regular gas is now priced at 2.23. Not that big of a drop but the .70 cent drop in diesel causes questions for me...

Supply and demand doesn't even come close to an answer to a .70 cent drop overnight.

The question I would ask is how much of that drop was the station? and how much the supplier? Both can gouge ya know . . .

This is the best link I know of to track this stuff. I'll be curious to see it next week after the drop RetNav saw should be noted.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/info_glance/prices.html

These oil execs all know that they will be under a microscope, so I highly doubt they are doing stuff that they can't explain. Exactly on the money. Most news sources made it front page last week that several petrochenical firms made record profits in the last quarter..
So by lowering the price at the pump to bare minimum profits, they are attempting to disarm the impending backlash from the public over price-gouging. This will have two effects on reactions to the reports of record profits. It will quiet the rage at the pump, while it sets-up a slim-profit report for the next quarter. The latter will help them in court if it ever goes that far.

After all, they aint stupid.

Stop looking for snakes in the woodpile. Let's reveal SOME FACTS.

1. We haven't built a refinery, in this country, in over twenty years. Guess what, Katrina/Rita shut down a couple of them. As they came back on line, prices dropped immediately.

2. Gasoline CANNOT be moved around to different geographical areas to meet geographical demand. Why? Because of ludicrous "regional" blend requirements.

3. We can't drill here, we can't drill there, even though we know where it is, in our own backyard. We are at the total mercy of an unstable part of the world because of tangled environmental statutes.

Wake up people. We need a SOUND energy policy, in this country based on proven environmental protection techniques and policies. Enough of the "special interest" environmental groups getting their way.

None of which explains why fuel went up 1½ times in as many days after The Storm hit. Even some of your conservative brethren in Washington are questioning why this happened and calling for hearings. Won't help much, but at least they're giving lip-service to the possibility of gouging.

Again,

SUPPLY AND DEMAND.

Gasoline is not stored in 30 day supplies. We don't have the refining capacity to store that far ahead. There was also a HUGE spike in demand with people preparing for the storm.

I'll never change your mind.

Politicians follow the lead of constuants. If the constuants believe there is a snake in the woodpile, they'll find one even if they have to make it up.
