Re: Whats with the double underlined blue links?

It is a form of “Pop Up Ads” that is generating extra ad revenue income for iboats.

It is not a virus.

iboats controls the number of ads appearing, the links' color, placement, and look and feel, the way the ad unit is launched when a user clicks, as well as, competitors? filtering, keyword filtering, etc.

Yes, they are, as with all forms of “Pop Up Ads”, annoying.

What can you do to get rid of them, don't ever click one, and maybe iboats will pull them off. If you click, they (iboats) earns money, and they will most likely stay.

I would not give the company (Kontera Contentlink) any information in the form of a “Opt Out” as was suggested here with the hope it will stop the ads. This information will just go into a data base of “user information” (yours) to be probably sold (data mining) at a future date to advertisers.

P.S. I only see it, if I am not log on.

But ST, if you click disable, it does and they go away.
It does not ask for any info of anykind.
Am I missing something here?

Hi SpinnerBait.

That just works as long as you keep their cookies stored locally on your computer. They have to have a way to identify you.

To do this they need whats called “session cookies” (only used once), or “persistent cookies” (cookies that stay on your PC for ever), or your permanent IP address (won't work if your are on a dial up/dynamic IP address). I delete all cookies automatically each time I leave a web site, and I have a dynamic IP address so I would either have to repeat it each time, or give them my permanent IP address.

“Persistent cookies” are also used by these companies to track your travels through the web. Documenting each and every website you visit and the pages you surf. This information is collected and used to build user profiles, which are then sold to advertisers, or used to promote their services to advertisers. They like to call it "Target Marketing", and you are the target.

When I said don't click them (the ads), and maybe they (iboat) will remove them, I meant don't click to see the ad. They (iboat) are paid by the “click through rate”, or how many people click a certain ad link. Kontera Contentlink is paid by the advertisers according to how many clicks they get on their ad to their product or service.

If you don't log on & off iboats and don't delete cookies, there by leaving their (iboats) cookies on your PC you might not see them (the ads), even if you don't log on.

Because this is a “server side application” there is not really much you can do locally on your computer to permanently stop these type of ads.

I have said this here before, I am in Corporate Communications, Design & Advertising, and as a insider in the business, I can only warn you not to give any personal data in the Internet to anyone you wouldn't give your wallet & your house keys to.

Each time the industry finds a way for consumers to block ads, the industry finds a way to by-pass this method. This is just a newer method to plaster web sites with cheap advertising.

The best method this time, is just to register with iboats, and the ads are gone after you log on (or until iboats decides to change this)! :D

That's the reason I don't see them logged on and that is what the IT guy is telling us.
You should not see them once you are logged on.
They are there for the guest just browsing the forums.

Please guys and gals, let us know in this thread if you see them and if when you do are you logged in or not.
The IT guy/s wants to know.
A registered member is not suppose to see them.

I see them when I am not logged on, and I don't see them when I am.

Re: Whats with the double underlined blue links?

In IE, I see them when I am not logged in, they're not there if I am logged in.
In Firefox 3.0 (my primary browser) I don't see them whether I'm logged in or not. I do have Ad Block Plus and it may be blocking them as I never see any ads of any type on iboats...

I clipped what I saw on IE when I was logged out and attached it below.

BTW, there are some single underlined ones, too (not just doubles)...

That is the way it is suppose to work.
If a person is not logged in then it sees them as a guest and shows them to them.

I get paranoid at the mention of virus/trojan/hijacker etc. as long as Iboats says its ok and not a virus no problem. :D

Same here! Log in and the lines go away. Why can't registered members be left logged on if desired? This is VERY annoying and iBoats is the ONLY forum I've seen it on. So far, anyway.

I am always logged on, even if I close the browser.
When I open back up and come here, I am logged on.

Re: Whats with the double underlined blue links?

Sometimes I'm logged on for days at a time, sometimes I get bounced. For example, I just now had to log back on for this post. On my machine, anyway, things seem to have slowed down since the arrival of the blue things. I'm not a computer geek.
