Misfires as on any internal combustion engine is a little difficult to diagnose and involves more testing than any other problems. And usually the only way to diagnose is by elimination process. First, find out if it is mechanical or electrical or even fuel related. To do this, use a timing light and place it over the plug wire one at a time and then watch the flashing against a dark colored paper for consistency. If there is any inconsistency, then you can tell it is electrical. The method of pulling plug wire and listening for change in engine tone doesn't work with your type of problem because the misfire IS NOT CONSTANT. If there is none, then most likely it is either mechanical or fuel related.
