1979 Evinrude 85hp V4 Mod. 85995R

Motor is being completely rebuilt. All new pistons, new sleeve in #4 cylinder to factor bore. All cylinders will have factory bore settings with new rings, WEISCO pistons, new gasket kits, etc. All rebuilt by a certified mechanic.

I'm considering using synthetic oil because it smokes less, less carbon build-up, and as added insurance for a long life on my rebuild with less carbon buildup.

Looking into the following 2-cycle synthetics:

- Amsoil
- Penzoil sythetic blend
- Royal Purple
- or standard Quick Silver at Walmart (not synthetic)

Any personal EXPERIENCE with any of these or other products? I know the debate on synthetic is a deep one so I' m not interested in the debates, only products and personal experience on some of these or others.

I do not use any of the above, but have heard from MANY fellow aomci members that swear by the Penzoil Full Synthetic.

I use the XD series of oil from BRP. They have a built in carbon guard and smoke very little.

I find if you add a little EVOO to butter it keeps it from burning.

I use the Penzoil Full Syn. I bought two of the gallon containers last year on clearance at Tractor Supply.

Seems to smoke less in the outboards, my chain saws, snow blowers, sons mini bike, weed trimmers, leaf blowers............

Never tagged a valve or burnt a cylinder, but I didn't do it before that either when I was using standard 2 cycle oil.

Re: What's your favorite synthetic 2-cycle oil?

You do not want to break it in on synthetic oil... With the Wiseco may sure you run it thru several heat cycles to temper the pistons as they are pretty soft new and dont run it hard till you get several hours break-in on it.
BREAK-IN PROCEDURE FOR NEW ENGINE,
NEW P/H, OR ENGINE REBUILD

DURING THE FIRST 10 HOURS OF OPERATION, USE 50:1 MIX IN FUEL TANK PLUS OIL INJECTION. ON OIL INJECTED ENGINES, VERIFY THE OIL USAGE FROM THE OIL INJECTION TANK BEFORE DISCONTINUING 50:1 OIL/FUEL MIXTURE IN THE FUEL TANK. IF THE ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE OIL INJECTION OR THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN RENDERED INOPERABLE, THEN USE 25:1 OIL MIX IN THE FUEL TANK.
DO NOT OPERATE ENGINE OUT OF WATER – TRY TO MINIMIZE ALL POSSIBILITIES OF AN INFANT OVERHEAT. “IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO VERIFY THE ENGINE IS REACHING A MINIMUM TEMPERATURE – APPROXIMATELY 130 DEGREES.” THIS CAN BE DONE WITH A TEMPERATURE STICK, TEMPERATURE GUN, OR IF THE ENGINE IS UNCOMFORTABLE TO THE TOUCH.
DURING EARLY BREAK-IN, TAKE TIME TO GUARANTEE ALL ENGINE SYSTEMS ARE PERFORMING PROPERLY INCLUDING TEMPERATURE (MAX & MIN), TIMING, FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM, OILING, AND COOLING SYSTEM. ALSO, LOOK AT SPARK PLUGS EARLY TO DETERMINE ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS.
FIRST 10 MINUTES
OPERATE AT 1500 RPM IN GEAR. MOMENTARILY ACCELERATE BELOW 2500 RPM.
NEXT 30 MINUTES
ACCELERATE TO PLANE AND THROTTLE BACK, WHILE MAINTAINING PLANE. AVOID 3000-4000 RPM RANGE FOR PROLONGED OPERATION. THIS IS WHERE MOST ENGINES ARE LEANEST WITH HIGHEST TIMING.
NEXT 20 MINUTES
WHILE ON PLANE – ACCELERATE TO W.O.T. (WIDE OPEN THROTTLE) IN SHORT SPURTS (30 SECONDS OR LESS). RETURN TO IDLE FREQUENTLY TO ALLOW FOR A COOL DOWN PERIOD. IT IS IMPORTANT TO BUILD HEAT IN THE ENGINE FOR MINIMUM AMOUNTS OF TIME.
NEXT 9 HOURS
OPERATE ENGINE NORMALLY WITH NO EXTENDED TIMES AT W.O.T. – VARY ENGINE SPEEDS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE DURING THIS PERIOD. DO NOT OPERATE ABOVE MAX RPM RATING OF ENGINE.

Re: What's your favorite synthetic 2-cycle oil?

Why not? It ist desirable for new pistons to build up some carbon quickly? Please explain.
You want the pistons and rings to seat to to the cylinders walls and synthetic oil increases time of break-in do to thin viscosity and less friction/drag. Synthetic in a 2 stroke is different that synthetic in a 4 stroke as 2 stroke burns the oil and it has less smoke and carbon to build up in ring grooves which is the killer of the OMC crossflow engines. You want as little carbon as possible, you dont want to build carbon...

So you're saying don't run synthetic at all or don't run synthetic until after the initial break in? I was already told to run conventional oil during break in by my mechanic. He said it was ok to use sythetic afterwards.

He's breaking in the motor by hand at his shop so most of the break in will be done when I get it.

Yeah, but EVOO is a naturally occurring oil. He's asking about synthetic. Perhaps Canola is the ticket? :p

As Fast said, don't break in with synthetic, but you can use it once the rings are worn in.

I use the no name oils at 50:1 and i never have a problem . i also run NGK plugs and change them every year.I add half a can of sea foam about ever5-6 tanks also.(6-gallons per tank.)

I'll still stick with BRP's oil recomendations. Don't go with anything else.

Re: What's your favorite synthetic 2-cycle oil?

OK so here's a question about the breakin. I have an original 1979 repair manual for my motor. For break in period, it says do NOT run any oil mix other than 50:1 for break in and gives the typical break in instructions. This struck me as odd......I thought it was 25:1 for the initial break in and then 50:1 after break in. Anyone else ever read this in a repair or owners manual? This is an Evinrude repair manual too.

I spose a lil extra oil wouldn't hurt during break in. But I never bothered. Do be sure to follow the rpm/cooling & heating cycles. Fwiw I run Quicksilver Premium Synthetic Blend. Synthetic with a lil dose of dino for good measure.

almsot any place i could launch my boat, I wouldnt be able to adhere to those requirements....most places it takes more than 10 minutes to get out of the 5 mph zone. I would have to go to the Hudson River....its the ONLY place I boat that i could go more than 5 MPG with in a minute of the ramp...are you saying that it would be a bad idea to intitally start the motor for the first time at home on muffs?? I am thinking it might take some time to make sure everything is working, after a rebuild...bob

I vote for any TCW-III oil I can find cheapest. None of the ones on your list qualify.

XD-30 for the first 2 tanks. XD-50 or XD100 for the rest of its life.

Re: What's your favorite synthetic 2-cycle oil?

The OP has a '79 85 hp, most likely carbed and recommending TC-W3 at 50:1, not sure XD injection oil would be optimum. I've never owned a 'new' 2-stroke so I can't speak to break-in, but I've run various synthetics (both pre-mix and injection) when the smoking of dino oil got too obnoxious. Some brands reduce smoking more than others, never had a problem related to oil except some plug loading with dino after hours of idle trolling, hotter plugs fixed that ... ;)
