What's Your Weirdest Catch?

Crabbait and I were discussing this new thread to draw up some interesting stories. Since I do not YET have a good "Biggest Fish ever Caught" story, I thought this would safice. <br />My first trip out this season on the river, my buddies hammered them and all I was able to land was a beautiful beige, passenger side, floor mat. What a catch! I was telling crabbait that my buddy still has me beat. Last year in my boat he thought he had himself a nice fish; turned out to be someone's long john under wear. We won't let him live that one down. So let's hear some good catches!!!

Not neccesarily the weirdest, my own lure. A couple buddies and I were fishing a shallow back bay and they weren't catching a thing so I let them each use a lure of mine, the same style but different sizes of what I was using. Little did I know one of the guys didn't know how to tie a good knot, nor had he changed his line in several years. So we're fishing and he casts and all I see is my lure go flying 50 yards out, without the line attached to it. A little later we were drifting over that area and lo and behold there it sat in 2 feet of water, so I reached in and hooked it. Only keeper of the day.

probably will think of more, but last time fishin was the 1st time i ever hung a fist size rock on a crankbait! i guess when it came off the point it bounced a few times, then i got it over the dropoff, and my rod bent bigtime...hehehe, my bud was ready to net it... then saw what i had. don't remember ever doing that b4.

I once hooked into what I that was huge bass. I fought it for quite a while. After we were both thoroughly played out I reeled it in. It turned out to be an old tackle box.<br /><br />'Nuther'n...<br /><br />My uncle and I had filled an old metal bait bucket full of nice crappies. Hanging over the side of the boat its rope broke and down they went. After the crying and cussing was over all we could do was try to catch some more. After about 15 minutes my uncle got hung on something. It turned out to be the bucket. As soon as we got it up we quit for the day. Too much bad luck and good luck for one day I guess.

i caught a bard owl one night fishen at the chazahowitska river just south of hommasasa. i tossed out a shiner and about mid granny that old owl intercepted it. it was like watchen the steelers play the last couple of big games. needless to say that old owl was not to happy bout the whole thing. i had to wrap it up in a towel to get the hook out of its foot. did i mention that those talens are realy sharp? thought i was going to have to break out the hidden dragon style on it.

I once, when surfcasting on a west coast beach at night, thought I'd caught the biggest snapper ever. It fought with the current and waves. There was a gathering watching and my chest was set to explode with pride. 2 hours later I landed the biggest pile of seaweed I'd ever seen. My wife wasn't too impressed when I explained why I was soo late....<br />Ross

i was fly fishin' one day . i casted into an eddy where a mother goose an her goslings where mindin' there own business. one of the babies went for it ,, tried to pull it away but only set the hook.. had on a lite leader but wouldn't break.. i reeled in this splashin' fightin' gos . the mother didn't know what to do. when i picked baby up to remove the hook ,,OH MY LORD , she started commin' at me .. i released in record time a toss baby to mother , QUICK !! SORRY MOM !!

I was once fishin' in Destin Pass as the current was running out of the bay into the Gulf of Mexico. The water was emerald green and incredibly clear. A school of angel fish swam under the boat and when they passed I noticed a monster redfish near the bottom of the pass facing into the current. I quickly picked up a rod with a gold spoon intending to cast up-current and drift the spoon by the redfish. When I cast... a huge gull swooped out of the sun and nabbed my spoon. How can I best I describe it? It was like trying to fly a kite in a wind storm. And their ain't nutin' like landing a mad gull with a hook in it's mouth. Them suckers can bite! It ain't fun juggling a full-grown gull, a rod, and a pair of pliars. When the gull finally let me go -- the redfish was gone and my fishing partner was laughin his a** off.

It was Spawning time and my uncle, cousin and I were all running salamanders throught the bass beds at a local lake and caught very few fish, all of them were under 2 pounds. Later on I threw my lure into some reeds and my rod bent almost in half, I had hooked something that felt like a 6 to 7 pound bass. It fought hard for a few minutes until I managed to reel it in and found out that I had only belly hooked a 6 pound carp. I'll never be able to forget that day.

I caught an old rod and reel from like the 60's a couple years ago, but the best story is when my dad, sister, and I were out on the boat one day. My little sister didn't like the rod and reel and was cryin about it she said she just wanted to pull em in with her hand. So my dad tied some line to her finger and attached a hook and night crawler to the other end.<br /><br />Well, she got a hit. This was the ****dest thing I'd ever seen fishing. My sisters starts hauling in line and attached to the hook is : A 3 FOOT LONG EEL!<br /><br />Eel's are pretty rare up here on this part of the mississippi and I had never seen one before.<br /><br />It was hella cool. And mean as snot too.

One morning just as dawn broke I hooked in to something that was fighting crazy. Just as I brought it up to the boat I thought I had a snake. It was a freshwater shrimp. Looked like a skinny lobster. <br /><br />My dad caught a bat one evening fishing in the Texas hill country. That is about an ugly animal.<br /><br />My brother caught the back of my head with both trebbles of a rattle trap when we were kids. Dad pulled the hooks out, and with blood running down my head he told me to take a nap the fish were sill biting!

Texas Ranger - sounds painful but I bet you didn't take a nap when the fish were biting!! <br /><br />I remember a childhood fishing trip with my Dad... He got a huge bite, and then was battling for some time with something powerful on the line. When it finally got to the surface, we saw it was a giant stingray! Next thing I knew, this giant 'ray was flopping around in the bottom of the boat (not a big boat either!). I was terrified and had visions of being attacked by this thing... Fortunately Dad managed to flip it back over the side again! Lesson of that story :- don't drag anything into the boat unless you really want it!

Got a 3 way tie so here it goes.<br />1. A duck. I was fishing a community pond when a duck went after the blugill I had just hooked. Ended up losing the gill but hooking the duck in the wing.<br />2. Some kids were feeding gulls off an inshore pier I was fishing on I was casting out a mulett in hopes of a spottail ot flounder and a gull caught it in mid air and got hooked in the mouth. Them things are nasty when you finally get them in.<br />3. My own rod lost the previous week due to not putting it in the rodholder and leaving it in gear instead of freespool. It only was out a few seconds and then it went flying. I dragged a hook all over the area with no luck. Came back the next week thought I was snagged and pulled in my own rod the line was broken so whatever took it got away. Lesson learned use the rod holders like they are on the boat for.

Kiwi,<br /><br />I was about 6 at the time. Needless to say my mom wasn't too pleased with my father. A few years later my father hooked my brother in the old nut sack. Pulled it out with pliers. Glad it wasnt me!

Ah, trebles to the ol' nut sack. Brings new meaning to the phrase "balls of steel". The screen door's an interesting catch too! I remember as a kid, we had just ran out of bait but I still wanted to fish, so I continued to cast a plain hook and pulled in an old boot; to my surprise there was a cat fish in it. Another time we ran out of bait, I put a "Good & Plenty"(licorice candy) on my hook and found that the crappie and bluegills loved them! We were able to fish a little longer until all the candy was gone.
