Wheel Bearings?

When I bought my boat (Taylor SS 18ft), it came on a tandem axle trailer, with the two wheels on the forward axle missing, just the bare spindles. I have the hubs that are supposed to go on the trailer. If I take the hubs to a trailer shop, will they be able to tell me what bearings I need? I have no idea how to tell what size bearings it takes, and don't know how to measure it. Also, it doesn't have the spindle nuts either, and everywhere I look for bearings and other parts, the nuts are never included or sold, unless I'm over looking it. I'd just like to have this thing running on 4 tires again. Thanks in advance.

All 4 wheels should be the same. Get the numbers off the bearings and seals from one of the other wheels.

only if the hubs are the same, he said he has the other 2 but make sure they are correct....now's a good time to replace all the bearings

Yeah, that would be a good idea. I may as well go ahead and put some bearing buddys on it while I'm at it. Thanks guys!

Re: Wheel Bearings?

I have ordered form these folks in the past. When you click on hubs and bearings they give some standard part numbers for the diameter of the axle spindles. We just had some posts recently...click on our search function and enter wheel bearings. One of our guys posted some good specs and directions. Good luck! :)

The chart is here
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1975231&highlight=Bearings#post1975231

Since you have a tandem axle trailer, each axle is very likely rated for 3500# which means it very likely has 1-1/16 outer bearings and the inners are 1-3/8. Pick the bearing numbers from the chart. As for the seal, use the one in the 1-3/8 portion of the chart. Those numbers can be cross-referenced at any auto supply store such as NAPA, Auto Zone, Pep Boys, and even your local farm store will have them.

Thanks for the chart! When they refer to the "cup" are they talking about the race?

Yes I always refered to them as races but the guy at the trailer store "corrected" and said they were cups. You probably know already but change the cups along with the bearings. Its very tempting to throw the new bearings in and be done with it but you really should replace all components at the same time. Most auto parts stores will rent you a cup driver for not much money, they make the job SO much easier. Good luck..

...or if you have a decent drift to get the old one out, you can slice the old race using a grinder with a 1/16 blade and make your own driver mandrel if you want.

Re: Wheel Bearings?

Where can I find the washer that goes on the outside, that is held in by the spindle nut, and a spindle nut? Those seem to be hard to find. Thanks

So, I just tried to put a wrench on one of the existing spindle nuts, so I know which size to get, and the biggest wrench I have, 1-1/4", didn't fit! I looks like it is just bareley too small. I guess the next size up is 1-1/2"? Had no idea it would be that big.

Re: Wheel Bearings?

Sorry for the back to back posts. I've tried cross referencing the part number for the seal for a 1-3/8" wheel bearing (T555846) at every auto parts place near me and they all say that it comes back to nothing. Is this maybe a wrong number? Has anyone else had problems with this number? Thanks

Ayuh,... I'd go to a Heavy Industrial type of truck/ trailer Parts House,...
Or,... Probably Champion Trailer Parts should have them...

Donno,... Take the Old seal to the parts house,+ Physically match them up...

Re: Wheel Bearings?

To determine the size of a nut simply measure it across the opposite flats.

Well, I finally got everything I needed and got it put together! They had one hell of a time matching up that seal. Drove it down the road and everything feels great! Thanks for all the help guys!
