I have pre 898 mercuriser set up, going to be adding a 9.9 kicker.- Using the same gas tank that runs the 898. Could I just ad a T to the fuel Line , or should I put some valves in the to?

I added a filter mount to my boat, it has a pair of 'out' ports on the head. I took one of those, plugged a valve into it so I could shut it off and ran it through a outboard primer bulb type fuel line to a fitting on the transom. Works great.

If using valves on the fuel filter housing you can use an auxilary tank for the main engine too

Not the expert here but if I remember correctly you want valves. The reason being is your going to suck air from the motor not running. Now if they were both outboards then they both would have primer bulbs which would act as check valves.

Other comments about using a separate tank incase of fuel contamination, mention of two filters not just one. The outboard guys have been thru this many times. There are several threads on this one and have been looking for the one which did a great job of explaining what was happening.

I carry a 6 gallon outboard tank in my ski locker and plumbed quick connect fittings where I could attach direct to the outboard or directly to the IO motor in need. Pretty neat having spare fuel in case of contamination or brain fade on filling up on time.

Ayuh,...... Once upon the St. Lawrence creek, I ran outa gas, thinkin' the other tank was full,.....

My whole work crew in the barge, most of 'em drunk, 'n pullin' a 12' tinny I'd just been given,.... on the edge of the shippin' channel,.....

The Boss came by in his boat, 'n handed me the 6 gallon tank for his outboard, thinkin' it's gonna be "Funny" watchin' me tryin' to transfer the contents into my tank,... without a funnel,....

I got the laugh though,....
I just cut the end off his hose, 'n stuck it onto the barb on my fuel pump, 'n away We went,.....

I also use a separate gas can for my 10 horse kicker for the same reasons above. Main engine quits I never have to worry about fuel delivery or bad gas not working on plan b. Also, it can help when I'm back home troubleshooting main engine fuel as well.

I like that cutting the hose trick, last laugh indeed

Hope this helps, assuming it would be similar with an inboard.

Thanks guys, look what I just happen to have lying around. I see now how this will work. Going to keep the little 3 gallon on board. ty both tanks into this baby. Couple valves, and I'll be rockin and rollin.....

Am I reading this right you just have one valve to the outboard?

Here's the setup, and it works perfectly.

Single line from fuel tank in to filter head.

Line out from filter to electric fuel pump on main engine has a check valve in the middle. No on/off valve.

Second line out has a brass fuel shutoff with 1/4 pipe thread screwed into filter head, then a foot down has the primer pump, which also has a check valve built in. Then it has quick disconnect fittings on the back deck.
