You must drain the oil before you split the halves apart or you are going to make a big mess...

If it's not a gen II you should be OK. The small hole may drip a little but not bad. Do it all the time, just recheck the level when done. On a Gen II you will have all the oil on your feet in a few seconds when you pull the lower.

+1 Once the drive is split the all the oil in the upper half will run all over and lower too if the drive is not sitting upright.

Possibly not. cr2k's post sounds like it is from experience doing it. Probably the upper would have a vacuum and the oil might leak out very slowly.

But unscrew the vent and look out. :D

ever notice how much oil comes out of the drain plug while the vent is still closed?

Myself, I would drain the drive to do the job.

It is a gen 1. Thanks for the advice!!! I pulled the lower unit and only got 2 little drips of gear oil. Changed the impeller and put it back together!! Very simple job.

Gen 1 I don't believe you need to drain, Gen II you have to. But why wouldn't you?

I have never heard of not draining the oil before separating. I guess you learn something new every day.

But like he said - why would you not change the oil?

Re: When changing a impeller on a apha one gen 1

My answer was to the question of "do I need to". Most of the time drive service IS performed when you change the impeller. But maybe the oil was just changed and then decided to change the impeller, why dump $20 of fresh oil?

I see tons of threads that are dozens of posts long, stating opinions, etc, but never really answer the original question. So I answered the question and, gee, opposed to several opinions I was right.

OK off the soap box, for now.

I just changed the oil in the outdrive a month ago thats why i hate to just dump it out.

I am having a wierd problem on start up. I had the drive in forward gear when i replaced the lower unit. The shift lever moves freely forward and backward. but the boat has no neutral or reverse it is only forward gear????????

You might have to pull the drive back apart the put it back together with the lower in forward as well as the upper. They pop out of gear really easy when apart. Ask me how I know. Only took me twice to get it right.

To keep the lower in forward:

turn the lower shift shaft clockwise WHILE turning the prop CCW until it stops. You will be in forward in the lower.

The Trick:

You have to hold the prop in forward the entire time you bolt it back to the upper half. If it gets bumped out of gear you have to drop it back and do it over again. Here is a pic of the lower shift shaft to turn clockwise below.

Ok i have figured out what is going wrong. When I put the lower back on I guess I dropped the washer that goes on top of the shift shaft so that it holds the shifter all the way in the top position. Can anyone give me the spec on the washer like inside hole dimesion and thickness so i can pick one up at the hardware store tomorrow and finally fix this thing!!

it is just astainless washer ,measuer the shaft and one washer ought to doit but maybe you can measure how far it has dropped, and how much you need . might need two stacked.
