can I just unplug it? My engine is running very rough and I want to see if the esa is causing it. Would I have to run jumper wires to bypass it? The switches are operating properly. 1988 2.3l omc. Thanks.

Re: when checking the esa

If you want to totally bypass any ESA operation, find the ground wire that comes out of the ESA and grounds on or near the bracket and disconnect it. The ESA will then be unable to ground out the points and will therefore be ineffective.

Unplugging that little round harness will only help you if the switches are malfunctioning, which I think you realize.

Good luck!
