DHadley...this is off topic but I went through Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda yesterday when looking at a boat. What a disaster over there!

Oh, this is nothing -- other than (not) getting into a restaurant, if you can find one open. We even have some traffic lights, power and cable now. You should have been here the day after Friday the 13th.

OK, I'm having trouble deciding whats the best deal and the best value, so I am goint to take a poll. Currently I have looked at 1.) a 1979 Evinrude 115 that was rebuilt about 4 years ago with a bad tilt motor for $1,500. 2.) a 1996 Evinrude 90 (NOT a looper) for $2,500 and 3.) a 1986 Johnson 120 looper that has -0- hours on a new powerhead for $3,000. What would you buy for a fish-&-ski combo?

The looper would be my first choice but 3K for one that old - and a small bore to boot - is a bit much. If it has a 2 liter powerhead then thats a plus.

What would you guys consider a good warranty on a rebuilt motor. They guy that has it for sale (the 1986 120HP Johnson - asking $3,000) owns a repair shop. I have used him before and he appears to know his stuff, and was easy to work with. He said he would mount the motor and controls and go to the lake and we could test drive it, and make sure I liked the way it ran. What else should I ask for? 30days? 60days? a year?

With mounting and controls included is a plus.

Heres the thing about warranty -- it starts when you first run the boat. If you take delivery of it and use it a couple of times then put it in winter storage (if you do) the time may expire before you use it again.

Just one more thing to ponder....

Dhadley - Thats my thought also, If he just gives a 30 or 60 day warranty, I may miss out on the motor but having it sit in my garage during the whole warranty period doesn't do me much good. I'm thinking about just waiting until the beginning of next summer. If this motor is still available, fine, but in the meantime keep loking for a good "out of season" deal.

A lot of times a dealer will sell you the motor and go ahead and rig it -- slow season etc -- but as long as its not used then start the warranty next spring. Sometimes they do everything except something small like hook up the wiring and controls. Then you take it back in the spring and they finish it so the warranty can start. That way they're guaranteed the sale and you're guaranteed to get the motor.

Good for you and them. Its just hard looking at a fresh rig and cant hear it run...
