I put my 76 johnson 70hp on the muffs the other day to let her run a little. I turned the spicket on full so there would be plenty of flow. It idled for probably a minute and a half and the water was flowing out of the drain holes and mostly the prop hub. I could keep my hand on the engine without it burning me and I had already checked the overheat horn for proper operation. How long should it take for the water to start coming out the bottom dishcharge holes? There is no teltale on this engine. Thanks for the help...I turned it of after a minute or so of idling because the wifey was wondering where I dissapeard to! Didnt want to get cought!!

To get water flow completely through the engine you have to run it long enough for the thermostat to open, Maybe a minute or two.
It is not hard to install a tell-tale on your engine, run a search, there are several posts on it.

That engine will only spit /mist water and it should be coming out of the 2 holes below the shroud!! higher up than your drawing.. i had one of those and i actually had to have it in the river to notice anything coming out of those holes.

I believe your drawing is wrong. Both lower sets of holes are intake iirc. Only the top is discharge. On an engine like this, you have to have both sets of holes in the water in a bucket or trash can or something to correctly test. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The top discharge should be misting or dripping water, possibly even a bit more than that.

Re: When does the water start to flow?

I did notice a slight mist coming out of the upper holes...in the original booklet that comes with the engine it identifies the lower set of holes as the water discharge holes. I am sure I didnt let it run long enough for the thermostat to open. You guys are probably right though about it being submerged in the lake to truly test. I did see a youtube video (which was terrible resolution) of my same motor on muffs and water was flowing out the lower discharge holes. Like I said I only ran it for maybe a minute adn I could keep my hand on the engine without issue as to temp.

Cooling water is mostly discharged from the center of the prop. What you labeled as "discharge" is really a drain hole, which is one of a few and are there to prevent freezing in cold weather. It doesn't appear that you have any problem, just incorrect notions of what should happen when running on a hose.

Ok everyone...thanks for the help. I guess I might be incorrect in my assumptions. I will be camping for a week starting tomarrow so I am excited to use the boat.
