When I start motor what position should throttle be in?

I have a 1989 Force 125 motor. I want to know the propper startup method. Right now i prime the primer bulb until firm, then i pull neutral lock shift out so it is in neutral then i put throttle in highest position(all the way forward-fast idle),then i put key in start position, then i push key in so it turns on choke, then i crank it over. The reason I ask is because I was never told the right sequence and also it takes about three times of 7 seconds starts to get it running when cold. After i get it started it runs fine and it will start up quickly when warm. I was not sure if I should keep throttle in halfway position ( medium throttle) when starting cold. Thanks for your input board.

Your method sounds fine to me. You don't want your motor to start out racing when cold. A fast idle warm-up is the way to go.

Sounds like you've got the starting procedure aced. You can try starting with a little less throttle and see what happens but what you're doing now is fine.

c/6

Hooty

Thanks guys. I think I will try starting it up with a little less throttle cold to see if it starts up on the first try.

is your choke a choke or is it a primer circuit? if it's a primer, perhaps a couple of tickles will help you on the cold start.

Hey thisoldboat,

I have a Force 75 HP and sometime on the first cold start of the day I have to push 2 or 3 times on the key (choke) after it starts in order to keep it running and this is the way they explain in the owner's manual, they also recommand that the fast throttle should set in the middle.

Smoky

Wow...Only takes you 2 or 3 tries?

Every Force motor I have witnessed takes about 10 minutes to get to start.

Mine after 3 times max. 4 times it keeps running OK - but if there is a severe carbon buildup in the cylinders the fuel will be absorb by it and it will lean down the mixture too much there where you need to choke more.

Smoky
