Are you using marine grade plywood? Hopefully!

You should coat both sides with resin, and do the corners twice. Wet out a layer of 1.5oz mat on the transom skin and a layer of 1.5oz mat on the side of the plywood that is going to go against the transom. Just as it starts to gel, mix up a batch of resin/cabosil/milled fibers to peanut butter consistency and trowel it on the transom skin and plywood with a 1/4" notch trowel. Make sure to get it really thick around the corners. Then clamp that sucker into place. The excess putty will ooze out the corners, get a tablespoon or peice of pvc pipe and use the excess putty to make a fillet around angle where the transom meets the hullsides and bilge.

How big of boat is it, or how large of an engine are you hanging? Unless its small, you will need two sheets of 3/4" plywood.

Cloth is not a good choice with polyesters, use mat and roving. Like a6 said, coat it well with resin, the wood will suck it up and leave dry spots in the glass if you don't.
