The distributor drive belt, or timing belt, on my '73 50-500 makes a clicking noise as each tooth seats in to the gear on the distributor end when turning by hand. It also has about 1/2 inch of deflection. Is it time to change the belt before it fails--I can still read the "keikhaufer" on the belt so it is likely very old. There are no missing teeth on the belt but it seems awful loose to me--a car mechanic mind you, no experience with these things.

They could last years, or go tomorrow. I would replace it (they break, ya know darn well it aint going to be on the trailer on muffs!)
While yer at it..check all the teeth for any burrs or sharp edges..smooth them out
Also spin the distributer..should be smooth feeling..the bearings do go bad, and that will put stress on the belt.
Keep in mind the timing marks so it goes back right in sync

Do they normally have that much play in them, or generally make a bit of noise when the teeth on the belt seat? I'm going to order one, but just curious.

No, they usually are rather tight, like scaaty says it's time

Thanks very much for the help guys, I'll see if the local Merc dealer can find me one.
