When to Replace Impeller

How often do you feel it's necessary to change the impeller? (I've got a 2001 Volvo 5.0L SX Engine - in case that makes a difference.) My owner's manual suggests every two years but I've had someone tell me it should be done every year and I've heard others say that it can be done every three years. What do you think?<br /><br />Thanks for your input.

The lower unit impeller is particularly important with closed cooling systems, which I have. I put on about 60 hours per season and replace the impeller every other year and avoid problems. Just an opinion..........

If you have no cooling problems every two seasons is fine for that stlye pump ,but I wouldn't go any longer .Some people say you can go longer but why ,you can't pull over and call a tow truck, this is regular maintanance and you just can't get away from doing it .

It depends on how much you use your boat but I recommend every two years. The more you use your boat the longer the impeller will last. The impeller veins will get a set in them for not using it real regular.

Ever 2 yrs. should be fine. I change mine every yr. (but then I do wheel bearings twice a season (maintance nut).... I just refuse to have a simple problem due to routine maintance chores).

The pump on this motor is belt driven off the crank pulley. Every other year will be fine, it is very durable. With no maint. at all they often go 5 years before failing.

I have a 5.7 liter sx-dp and I would assume the impeller arrangement is the same. My engine is<br />a 2001 model with 680 hours on it now. My pump is crank driven as with my previous 280 volvo drive.<br />I am fresh water cooled and pondering replacement this year. So if this says anything to you your most likely okay.<br />charlie
