On my 93 3 hp Johnson model #J3RETB; now that I have it running and I want to move it from neutral to forward; please tell me at what point can I shift. Is there any magic to this and if so what is it? As I mentioned in an earlier posting the indicators are pretty well worn off the tiller. I can still make out the triangle outline.

Thanks in advance,

Not really sure what you are asking but with the motor sitting there at idle, shift into fwd gear and go. Assuming of course the boat is pointed towards open waters.

the labels are the 1st things to go. it is all trial & error. you have to learn the sound of the motor, and shift as slow as you can without it stalling.

tashasdaddy,

A local old timer said the same thing.

So I will start just off the furthest point on the mark going clockwise. At an idle speed I will move the shifter into drive and gradually move the throttle counter clockwise to get her up to speed. I will stop the engine with the kill switch or move the throttle back clockwise to the furthest point where I began.

I will forget about any reference to the points on the tiller and just think about start/slow (shift) and move to fast and back again to slow (shift) and stop.

Please confirm.

Thanks for your patience and help,

Simply put, you should shift where the motor RPMs are as low as it will go without stalling when dropped in gear. If you shift to high you;ll feel a jolt as it bangs into gear. It's also common to shear the prop shear pin on these little engines if you shift high. You'll get the fell of it fast.
