I am considering buying a 1974 starcraft but the owner says he doesn't have a title just registration. What type of documentation should I aquire if I buy the boat? Do I need to apply for a lost title at the SOS/DMV? I'm unsure if these laws vary by state but I am located in Michigan.

you need Michigan advice only; start with the agency that issues titles and registration (they are not necessarily the same). it is not an unusual situation.

check with your boating rules and regulations...book from your state...they should have them where you renew your tabs...

Many states never issued titles for boats until the 80's or 90's.
Some states still don't title boats under a certain length, or over a certain age.

I have bought 6 old boats in the last 3 years, none had titles, they do now. Just a matter of following the documentation requirements for your state.

At the very least, get a detailed bill of sale for each boat, motor, and trailer, and registration card in the name of the seller for the boat.
Some states will require it to be notarized.

The link posted above by UncleWillie has it all covered.
