When ya gotta vent

I took my 'new' boat out for the first time today. It has been 15 years since I used portable tanks.<br /><br />First the good news....I remembered the plug. <br /><br />Now the bad news...I forgot to open the tank vent. Its just amazing how much better they run when the vent is open.

I had my first little boat (a 16' Gheenoe) and finally save enough money for a 5hp Gamefisher (complete with molded plastic - $50/piece - they would break before the shear pin would )).<br /><br />That little motor sure worked better than my paddles and my little trolling motor. <br /><br />It would run great for about 2 minutes and then slow and stop. We'd wait a bit and then crank it up again and the same pattern.<br /><br />I, being a young boy with my first boat, shared the story with the older, "wiser" guys at work and they laughed until they were silly. They finally told me about the "vent". <br /><br />The next trip was much much better and longer.

Forgetting the vent is much more forgiving than forgetting the plug. Take it from someone who knows, and launches before light in the middle of Jan duck hunting......brrrrrrrrr!

I like to leave my vent on my tank in the 1/2 open position all the time, even when it is parked for a month.<br />Makes it easier to forget about it.

I'm glad I put a permanant tank in my center console with a permanent vent!<br /><br />btw...when I go hunting/fishing in winter, I put the plug in the night before....I hate cold water!
