Where and what kind of bilge pump?

I have an old Lyn-Craft 16 foot fiberglass v-hull and would like to install a manual bilge pump mainly for saftey reason and for the few times water does get in the boat. I am very new to boating and was wondering where to mount and what would be a satisfactory type to get?

Manual bilge pumps don't mount anywhere. You pull them out when needed, flop the hose over the side, and pump away. Electric bilge pumps are the way to go and they are placed at the lowest point in the rear of the hull next to the main drain plug. You can have them automatically activate with a float switch, isolated toggle switch...or both.

That is the type I meant. Thanks for the info. I think I will mount it with a toggle switch.

Welcome to Iboats Dave..

Remember you dont have to Mechanically fasten ( screw ) your pump down. There are many people that locate where there pump ( Rule ) is going to be and dab some 3m 4200 on the pickup " plastic screen " and clip the pump to that.

There are float switches and manual switches as well.. Full auto with a manual on demand switch is what most Yachts run with.

You can just run to a switch if your not in a well..

Please Heat shrink your connectors.. Dont want any sudden spark going on in the Bilge .

Just to help out a little, if you want to add a bilge pump (I can't think of why you wouldn't want on), a float switch and a 3-position toggle is a must. Get the toggle with the built in light in it, so if your pump comes on and the engine is running (you'll never hear the pump), you'll see the light in the switch activate and you can hunt down the problem.

The switch positions should be 'manual', which turns the pump on immediately, and 'auto', which activates the pump by the float alone. The 'off' position will still allow the pump to kick on via the float. Wire the pump with a constant 12v hot source so it always has power. Here is the proper wiring diagram:
