I have a 1990 233 XL Regal Ambassaador, 5.7 Mercruiser sterndrive, alpha 1 drive. I'm looking for where the flappers are located. I need to inspect them.

Prior owner said and I was there when it happened, that he came into dock to refuel, overshot and threw it into reverse under high idel. The carb backfired, spitted. He refueled but it would not turn over. After 1/2 an hour, he had someone tap the starter and squirt starter fluid. He was able to get it running, drove it for 10 minutes, about 20 mph. When he was pulling into his dock and went to back up he stalled it again (I drove there to meet him and saw it happen again).

Note: he always had an idel problem, therefore he always feathering the shifter so that it wouldn't stall going into forward or reverse.

Now the cylinders and crankcase have water. Seller believes it sucked water via flapper. I need to inspect them. Please advise. Thank you

Pull off the risers and look inside the Y-pipe.

How long has the engine been sitting with water in it?

You need to worry about drying up and lubing the engine before you start to look for the cause.

Get the spark plugs out and spray some oil in those cylinders. If not you can get a real good look at your flappers after you have pulled out that engine for a new one...

I've already lubed the cylinders, cranked the motor and did a compression test. So far, so good! When I pull the risers off, how far is the Y-pipe from there. Can I clearly see it, is it in the elbow?

Whats the deal with the shift cable, shift cable to what and were is it located.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna put the outdrive in a very large tub and try to start the motor. I believe that it will start with no problem.

Take the risers and elbows off,the flappers are just where the y pipe attaches to the elbow.

Do NOT try to start the engine while keeping the drive in water.I had mine so that water was over the lower unit of the drive, destroyed my waterpump and burnt my flappers.Muffs cost 5e here,I bet they are even cheaper in the states, its a must have item and 100x easier than trying to dip the drive in a water.
