Where are the recirculation valves?

I have a 1998 115 V4 Crossflow. It has a very rough idle, and after rebuilding the carbs didn't take care of the problem, it was suggested to me on this board to check the recirculation valves. The OEM has a procedure for checking them (hooking vinyl hose to syringe and attempting to inject alchohol into them) Unfortunately, it doesn't tell me where they are! I also have pored over the parts diagram for this engine and I can't find them either!?

Does anyone know where they are / how to find them on this engine? Also, how many of them are there?

Thanks in advance!

Kent

Re: Where are the recirculation valves?

Look on both sides of your motor and you should see 2 small hoses on each side that go from the cylinder part of the power head to up in front by the carbs. The starboard side should be fairl;y open and easy to see. the port side may have some stuff in the way like the starter and the T/T control box. The hoses connect at the block with free flowing nipples. They connect to the re-circulating valves at the front by the carbs. There are 4.

Re: Where are the recirculation valves?

Thanks for the advice Walker,

After work today, I took a look to try and locate them - and I am still not clear what they look like. I have posted a couple of pictures as well as the parts diagram - could you please point them out to me?

I have circled the connections, are they the red and blue circles?

Sorry to be a little dense here, but I want to be sure I'm looking at the right part.

Also, is there any way to test them besides using the syringe alcohol method? If I pull them out, should I only be able to blow through them one way?

Thanks again for all your help. This board is an amazing resource.

Kent

Re: Where are the recirculation valves?

I don't have a 115 manual or a motor here to look at so I can't be 100% sure but the red circle looks like one. Follow the hose from that one back the other way. Find where it hits a nipple on the side of the cylinder or on your motor it may be on the port covers. Those nipples are freeflowing both ways.Anyway, you should on each side. Yes you can pull them out and test them. There will be a fine screen on the end thats in the block.

Re: Where are the recirculation valves?

On the exploded view you posted the recirculation check valve is part # 2. The omc part # is 0392988
and it cost $11.97. I had to replace one on my 94 115 because I broke it while rebuilding the powerhead.
It will look like a small brass hose barb with a hose connection on one end and a small tubing thread on the other.
There are two hose connection under each carberaton.
The ones under the botttom carberator run to the # 1 and 2 bypass covers.
The ones under the top carberator come together with a tee and run to the main bearing.
They are just chech valves, they allow flow in one direction only.
