Where can I find a reserve boat hoist hook to mount on my existing one on the inside?

I've got a cuddy cabin (20') and everytime I go to launch it, the hoist guys have a hard time with it pivoting, scraping my hull, and not being able to move it completely up on my trailer because of how the front hook is setup underneath. It happens that my achor well is directly above it and I have access to the nuts/shaft holding the hoist hook on. The guy at the hoist said they make a reverse style hook that would mount onto the existing back of the shaft so they could hook it up directly from overhead through the anchor well compartment. Has anyone heard of this or know of where I could buy one? Do I have to set the entire setup backwards or can it have two hooks? I don't know if it could support it just by pulling it directly up. What do you think?

Well.

I can not believe any front towing hook could EVER be used to lift the front of a boat. Swamp People do not do that to their work boats.

We now use BIG fork trucks to lift boats on & off of boat trailers on the ground. Why are they NOT using 2 BIG soft slings? Each sling has a adjustable load spreader bar to prevent crushing the hull. And another spreader bar between the 2 smaller ones.

DO NOT LET THEM LIFT FROM THE INSIDE of the anchor well !!! That bow U bolt does NOT have enough plate area on the outside of the hull. It is designed for pulling on the outside only !! The pulling forces are heaviest for anchoring. Not verticle lifting. I think they probably have crushed the gell coat & most of the glass cloth by now. If you see mold colors around the outside or inside, the have damaged the hull pretty good.

Go to another place. Sounds like a farmer near me who damages lots of boats every year with his cheaper prices.

Thanks for the info. He made it sound like you just flip the "U" around and you can lift it straight up. I'm glad I asked before I did anything. So just find someone that uses a sling style lift?

i agree with cyclops.

the bow eye is designed to take load form the out side of the boat.....not the inside.

the set up they are using is a weird one to me.....

this is only a 20 footer......so i dont see any real problems with a PROPER hoist

Drive into different nearby marinas / boat yards. The ones that have a HUGE fork truck with 2 long poles should be fine.
Cuddies do have more weight in the bow area.

Can you call you boat manufacturer & ask where the lifting point on the hull are. If slings MUST be used.
Forktrucks are SAFER . Except for some heavy & very rounded hulls.

i still can beleive that these guys are picking up boats on a hoist...straight up in the air...

and to even mention that the reverse bow eye could hold a boat properly........like.......wow:eek::confused::facepalm:

By lifting the boat from the deck hardware, you are placing the entire weight of the boat on the seem where the deck and hull are joined. This sounds like a mickey mouse operation.

Re: Where can I find a reserve boat hoist hook to mount on my existing one on the ins

this post has been bothering me, i think we need to see pics of their hoist system.....it is not correct.

, the hoist guys have a hard time with it pivoting, scraping my hull, and not being able to move it completely up on my trailer because of how the front hook is setup underneath.

every bow eye hook in under the rub rail.....THEY are damaging your boat

The guy at the hoist said they make a reverse style hook that would mount onto the existing back of the shaft so they could hook it up directly from overhead through the anchor well compartment. ?

This is an example of a guy telling you how to change your boat to fit HIS improper equipment

his idea is dangerous..and will only work with a bow eve that has a stainless steel plate on the exterior side of the hull.
most 20 footers dont have that plate. he is making a mistake that could cost you your boat, and also cause injury.

Kind of like trying to lift your entire car/truck with a bumper mounted hitch. It wasn't designed to do that, or they would all be doing this. I would inspect the area like others have mentioned, the damage may already be done.

I wish I could get you a picture of their setup to show you. It has two hoists. One for the back that hooks to the two eyes in the back and a separate unit for the front. It is chain with about a 6' lenth of nylon with a hook for the front. When he hooks it, the hook is bent sideways on my hull with the nylon pulling against the bottom/side of the boat. It spins the boat when it raises it up. I'm trying to picture how the "correct" set up looks like or how it would attach. Anyone have a pic?

Does the lift look something like this?

boatdavit.jpg

I used to use a lift similar to it for my 14' whaler..it had a proper bow lift eye though. You are not supposed to lift the boat from the eye that is under the bow. My neighbors have a setup like you were originally asking about (bow eyes in and out) but their boat came like that from the factory and is properly reinforced for lifting. I'd stop using this guy right away.

Some boats like the Whalers and traditional style 19ft or less Ski boats and maybe the Donzi Sweet 16 style have factory center hooks FOR lifting in the center of the bow and stern. These hooks arent just on the top surface like a cleat, I've seen the behind backing and most are incorporated to the bow eye and in the stern, toward the transom.

I've seen 20ft boats lifted or on a travel lift being supported by the stern eyes on a spreader bar and the bow, by a strap going down and through the bow eye, that strap was resting largely under the bow of the hull and the "keeper" was attached to the eye so it didnt slip out though it seemed sturdy and supportive.

You get over 20ft and you dont really want to be lifting by the eyes alone, that is alot of pressure/ weight...

The hoist looks kind of like the picture. Pretty much the same process but the lift moves on a winch system. I'll have to look at my bow cleat and see if it goes all the way through. I did notice that there are a few plates on the outside of the hull on the eye. I might try calling someone that knows the "factory spec" on hoisting it.
