Where can I look up certain 6hp part or kit numbers to order them online?

It seems that a local outboard place might want to charge me a little too much for parts for my motor...

I do have one other option about 40 miles away that I haven't asked, nor taken the motor to, yet, but I might as well ask here:

I have a Johnson 6HP, Model 6R79E, Serial J5099795 that is basically brand new (believe it or not - total hours on the motor have to be around 12, 10 with the previous owner, 2 with us).

I'd like to get an impeller (kit?), or water-pump kit (whatever it needs), and a guess a carb kit (just in case the gaskets are leaking or something... the carb looks clean as it sits on the motor).

How do I go about getting the correct part numbers? I see I can order from a few places... not sure about the best place for prices yet.

Yes, I am serious about the 12 total hours thing... I'll see if I can provide pictures here.

I feel a little bad about using it 'cause it's so clean. Still has the original splotches of grease/lube around the carb, too.

So I want to run it - but run it right so it lasts.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks! Would you believe that I didn't even know iboats sold parts? I looked at this just as a forum, lol. Looks like good enough prices for me, but there is only an impeller listed for the 1979 year, not an impeller kit with the seals / gaskets. '79 seems like an odd year for the 6HP's according to the parts numbers on the site.

If the motor has such low hours as you claim, with the possible exception of the pump housing gasket, you probably won't need anything other than the impeller. If push comes to shove, you could always make a new gasket if you have to.

You are correct, the '79 has the new plastic pump housing with stainless steel liners. Don't fret, it is a much better pump than the old aluminum housing one. If you were to want a complete water pump kit for the older models, you would get the new plastic one.

Is there a chance one can re-use the housing pump gasket? If not, which material would I use to make a new one out of? I'm still a little bewildered as to why my model's gaskets aren't available, and why mine uses such a different impeller, but I know that's how it goes sometimes. I probably ought to take it apart to make sure it wasn't an early-model-year or late-model-year motor that had either the previous or next impeller system installed in it.

I'll order an impeller and the carb kit soon.

Don't worry about the gasket till you see it. It may be fine.

As I suggested, the pump underwent an engineering change around 1978-ish. Many of the other old aluminum pump housings have undergone similar changes. Just an improved design. The aluminum housings wore badly from sand and silt and salt water attacked them. The plastic doesn't corrode, and the stainless liner withstands abrasion from dirty water better. According to your model number you should have the newer one.
