Where did my oil go?

I have my 1985 140 hp Evinrude on the stand in my garage now just getting it ready for a paint job. I figured the smart move would be to replace the water pump impeller before I painted it. I bought the boat a year and a half ago and don't know the history of the impeller. Anyway The first step in my Clymer was to drain the gearcase. There was no oil there. Does the motor have to be in a certain position to drain the oil. If not, where could this oil have gone. There is no sign of a leak. I had it serviced about a year ago which was supposed to include and oil change. OH by the way, do any of you Guru's have some good impeller replacement directions or cautions, it's my first time. Sorry for the rambling post.

Thanks,
Scott

Someone may have drained the lower unit to ship or it leaked out.Hopefully you haven't run it since you got it.Was there abosolutely no oil or water that drained out?Did you remove the vent screw as well as the drain screw? You could also probe into the drain hole with a piece of wire and insure that there isn't a slurry of emulsified goo.You can pressure/vacuum test the lower unit for leak source before installing.

Otherwise ,waterpump replacement is pretty straight forward procedure as long as you don't have any stubborn bolts. Also simplifies the task if you use an engine manual as a guide on your first attempt.Make sure you disconnect the shift rod before attempting to drop lower.

Two things could have happened. First the oil may have been drained and never replaced. Not likely if you have been using it. Second the seals that keep the oil in may be bad. There are two types of seals. One keeps the water out and the other keeps the oil in.

If you get the factory rebuild kit for the water pump, it has an exploded drawing included. Makes life a lot easier the first time.
