Re: Where do i start, what did i get myself into!!

Hi all,

I don't mean to intrude but I am new to all this and am curious about the tools needed for the job. I can understand the Sawzall, Skilsaw...it is the grinders I need help with. After you remove the soaked foam then what needs to be grinded...the tops of the stringers so you can get to the rotted wood? Are you grinding the hull down as well? Why?

Also, when it comes to the transom if you don't remove the cap then are you planning to cut sections out from the inside of the boat(essentially leaving the outer hull intact) and dig out that which is rotted? This way your only replacing parts of the transom instead of the whole thing...

It looks like I will be starting a similar project with my boat so trying to learn...

Thank you!:)

When you cut out the deck fiberglass lip left. the grinder with a sanding wheel is to remove this lip.

to cut the stringers out you can use a grinder with a cutting wheel to get closer to the hull but there will still be a fiberglass groove left. the grinder with a sanding wheel is used to get rid of the groove.

Grinder is also used for ruff and scuff inbetween glass layers and surface prep.

You are going to have to attack that problem from BOTH inside and outside.

The outside will require you to gring, rebuild fill and fether out the repair similar to body work on a car. The inside repair needs to be tied into it too so you gain the strength.

Do a search for Keel repair and you will see many results....

Look at this project and his pictures too... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=177052&highlight=keel+repair there were MANY holes repaired.

Some do nothing and have no problems re-assembling the cap to the hull.

Some have done nothing and the cap did not fit back over the hull or (more common) the walk-thru windshield did not close/line up correctly.

Some tied rope around the hull and tightened to keep the original dimensions, others have tacked some wood across the hull to keep the original dimensions.

I have not read of anyone having a problem when they took even the simple method of using rope in two or three places.

If you are working with the boat on the trailer, and it rests properly on the trailer, it seems that taking even the simple rope precaution will be adequate to keep things in shape.

Good luck, and take/post pictures!

Mark42-When you say boat resting on the trailer properly what do you mean.I have been working with the boat on the trailer, however i'm not sure it's completely level. It's and old trailer with two bunks and 3 keel rollers. It seems that the boat has the bow up a little high and i'm not sure if i can push it back to get it level.

I got a little worried because i removed the first stringer and i'm afraid i'm going to step through the hull with all the stringers removed.Maybe i could lay 2x4's across so i can sit on them while i'm grinding away but i don't want to damage the hull or stretch it.

if the cap is left on and you are doing one stringer at a time you should be good.. when you are stepping on the bare hull can you feel it flex a lot or just a tiny bit or not at all.. if either of the last two.. you are probably fine aswell.

just check if the boat is square.. tape a string line from the bow to each corner of the stern and if they are equal then you are square..

Re: NEW PICS NEW PICS

Guys here is pics of the project so far, still deciding on the stringer situation.I want to go with the same foam filled stringers that were there before.Looks like roven woving stapled to the top of some kind of oak then filled with foam.

you will find that you will get better responses if you pick the one or two pics you are refering to and use the IMG tag and paste it right into your post as opposed to just linking to the whole gallery..

good luck.

Re: Stringer replacement confusion

Re: Stringer replacement confusion

Thanks 92Excel i think i'm just gonna keep pasting into my posts

Still tons more grinding to do however i wanted to ask this before i buy any material

Okay ,stringer question i want to keep the original design. It looks like the stringers are foam filled and wrapped in roven woving with a 1x12 on the top.How would i build this and keep the shape so the foam would pour right in and be sealed. On the ends of the stringer towards the bow it looks like it's just tabbed to existing fiberglass.

Or should i just scrap that idea and install a more normal stringer design.

Re: Where do i start, what did i get myself into!!

i would rebuild the stringer with 1 by on the 3 sides minus the side that would be in contact with the hull.. coat all of the wood inside and out with resin and bed them to the hull and then glass in place.. that will allow you to keep the shape for glassing and then fill them with foam after the fact just like you woul pour foam after a deck was in.. drill holes every foot or so.. put the bow high and pour in the the back hole allowing it to expand upwards..

hope that makes sense..
