Let me add Fort Fisher national historical park and fort located south of Wilmington North Carolina. It has the remains of the cival war fort and is only 1 mile away from the ferry that will take you from the old fishing village of South Port. Plenty of motels near by and also a large State funded aqarium.

I would definetly stay north of the Mason-Dixon line that time of year.

For my tenth anniversary, my wife and I spent two days in Sonoma, CA in a B and B with only one room in a disconnected building. We could walk into the town square in Sonoma. Once, while we were having lunch at a sidewalk cafe I gave her an anniversary ring.

We spent a day on the coast, which was pretty cool. We then drove into San Fran and stayed two days there.

Overall that was a pretty neat trip. You have alcatraz if you want history..

If you are looking for something smaller, Bayfield and Madeline Island is a nice plasce to spend a few days..

A concert at the Gorge at George....
Grand Coulee dam....
Mt Rainier, Mt. St. Helens....
The Hoh river rain forest....
The fabulous ocean coast....
Chuckanut drive....
Vancouver, BC.....
Take the Victoria clipper to the San Juans & Victoria.....
Stay a day or two on San Juan Island....
Absoloutely beautiful.....

Wow... the ultimate faux pas... I abandoned this thread for way longer than what I should have - I apologize for that.

Many thanks to everyone on all of their suggestions! I have looked into a lot of places and my wife and I have agreed on..... DR's suggestion; Yorktown, VA. That area is CHOCK full of history, is on the water and isn't that far south (per LF's suggestion RE: the Mason Dixon line.)

I think we're going to his Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and all the other historic places around the area. There is a Mariner's museum, loads of plantations, even a tallship you can go out to dinner on.

Sounds like loads of fun... now its time to start reading up on it!!!

I wouldn't advise going north of the Mason Dixon line... you wanna talk about some bad drivers right there.

You will definitely enjoy your time there. We go there about every other year and have a great time. Generally stay in Williamsburg - close to Colonial Williamsburg, Water Country USA, and Busch Gardens. Short jaunts to Jamestown and Settlement there, and Yorktown. Definitely lots to keep you busy! Get the full year Colonial Williamsburg pass - more bang for your buck and lets you enjoy Jamestown and Yorktown also! Enjoy!

Don't forget to visit the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Admission to Busch Gardens gets you into the brewery too. Free beer! And interesting too if you've never been to one.

Boston, plenty of historical sights, museams and it is on the water. You can also stay outside of the city and take a train in to see the sights. It is also worth the drive to Brideport, Rhode Island to see all the huge mansions such as the Breakers.

hope you like crime traffic overpriced hotels i worked out there last winter and hated ever min of it. you can go over seas and rent a yacht and spend a week on a river and see alot i've been really thinking about doing this on my 10th
