Dealers keep selling them, where do they go?
Do dealers ever cut up junk ones and put them in a dumpster?
Or are they all out in the country on a vacant lot?

A lot of 'em end up here...

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=287916

They end up in dumpsters or slowly rotting away behind the house. My BIL at one time was restoring a wooden boat, decided it wasn't worth it; and put it out with the trash a little bit at a time.

There are dealers around here that will scrap out an older boat, or even a boat they feel is not worth reselling. The parts, which is about anything you could ever think of needing, are put on the shelf for sale. The boats go on a trailer and sent to the landfill.

I have even helped a buddy scrap out a boat he bought because he needed the outdrive. We cut up the boat to take to the landfill only to find out we could have left the boat whole, filled it with trash and push it off for the same price.

A lot of them just wither away in a backyard somewhere. Particularly fiberglass boats which if poorly cared for will not be restorable after extended periods of neglect.

That's the one thing I do like about aluminum boats. Doesn't matter if someone left it in the back yard for 20 years. Might need a new motor, but the hull can usually just be cleaned and painted and thrown back in the water.

Re: where do old boats go?

we had two old wood fishing boats up at the cabin in mn. when i was a kid (in the 60's). they got to leaky and were replaced with an aluminum boat. one got marshmellows roasted by it in the camp fire at night. the other made a nice flower pot till it went back to mother nature.. it's totally gone now...

i have dad's '72 glass speed boat in my back yard. needs a full restore. it's just sitting there and has been for 4 or 5 years now. someday i may do something with it other than rob parts off it for my boat that floats...

My dad had an old Christler bass boat. He ended up filling in a pool in the backyard and the boat and trailer ended up in there.

Re: where do old boats go?

Sadly, a lot of them sit for years and years. Someone gets fed up with it and they either get parted and crushed, crushed altogether, or they try and sell them.

I remember back a few years, I was looking around a local Marina. The Marina had a good dozen or so wood boats out behind the buildings. Everything from 16' runabouts to a bunch of mid 30'+ Chris Crafts, Trojans and even a 40' Pacemaker Aft Cabin. The boats had been neglected and left for dead. Some had the running gear gone, some looked complete top to bottom. I saw these posted in an add for saving old wood boats at one point. A couple of years later, on a return trip when looking for the boat I got now, I peaked around back and all the wood boats were gone.

My Marina used to cut them up and bury them, or send them to the scrap yard. My guess would be these boats suffered the same fate. Only a few wood boats remain on our marina property, one or two see the water, and a couple are either lined up, or waiting for scrap.

In our neck of the woods, we have Raymonds - http://www.raymondsboats.com/u_fix_it.htm

Several acres of older boats, all under a shed roof. At least they are upfront about condition. Besides those listed under "Pick Your Project Here", they have a lot more available.

The local race track puts on boat races- Evergreen Speedway, Monroe, WA

From the website-
BOAT RACES
Boat races are another exciting form of racing at Evergreen Speedway. Boats are chained or tied to the back of a racecar and let loose on the figure 8 track. The object is to try and smash the other drivers boat until there is only one boat left on the track. It-s a no holds bared as these crazy drivers will do just about anything to destroy their competitors, cars and boats

Craigslist

We also have Budget Boats "the poor man's boat yard" for boats motors trailers gear and pieces. For example, I picked up a $35 bow light for $10 to replace a broken one.
The yard is chock full of i/o bowriders and small cabins. The open boats move quickly.

It depends on how they lived their lives ... have they been good or not? The good boats go to boat heaven, the others, well ... :p

boy I wish we had bone yards here in Upstate NY - it seems the junk boats are spread thinly everywhere around the lakes. every marina/dealership has a dozen or so, and you have to risk bees and snakes to look for anything.

I also wonder how many sit behind people's houses - I figure near a lake or river it is 1 in 10 houses with an unused boat...and yes, the dump here takes them for a fee...

Re: where do old boats go?

It's sad to see the wooden ones waste away, especially the sailboats. There was one in my extended family that held all the records on the Bay. Before its ultimate demise, it was a $50,000 boat that you couldn't sell for more than $4,000.
The 40 year old cabin cruisers are practically free around here. You see ads where the seller "just invested $15,000" in it; for sale for $3,000.
I love the deadrise workboats and think they make the ultimate party barge. But as the name implies, it will be a work boat in that you'd spend all your time working.
But this is cool: next door is a boat--just a 14' wooden rowboat--my great uncle built probably 100 years ago. So some of them stick around!

Re: where do old boats go?

We leased a piece of property a few years back for my motorcycle shop. The previous tenant left this monstrous cabin cruiser beside the building. I needed the space for storage and had a heck of a time finding someone to pick the boat up. I contacted the previous tenant and he was very rude and said it wasn't even his - someone else left it there. I tried to give it away and no one would even think about it. It was in BAD shape. A friend of mine (and I'm not real proud of this) told me if the boat was abandoned the police would have it towed, but not on private property. It somehow mysteriously ended up on the side of a dead end road and was towed a couple days later to a local tow yard. The previous tenant, who was in fact the owner, got hit with a huge tow/storage bill. It's funny how things work out.
