Sandollar.....If you haven't gotten the tach yet, they usually come with installation and connection directions. Good Luck.

Re: where do you connect the volt tac?

You say you have a 1978 engine, then change it to a 1979 55hp Evinrude. Neither the 1978 nor the 1979 55hp has a junction box with fuses etc where the battery connects. What is the model number of the engine?

Re: where do you connect the volt tac?

That model number indicates your engine is indeed a 1979 55hp Evinrude, however that model does not incorporate a junction box (fuses, bat connections etc).

But at any rate the tachometer should have four wires and the wires attach as follows. Nothing attaches to any plug wire.

Black = To ground
Blue = To light switch
Purple = To 12v source (hot only when key is on)
Gray = To yellow/gray rectifier lead

There may be a gray wire at the dash/console end of the engine/instrument wiring harness. If so, connect the tachometer gray wire to that wire.

There may also be a three (3) socket rubber plug just under the key switch. If so, those sockets consist of a ground, 12v source, and the gray wire source.

Joe,

I think the light switch wire to the tach should be blue in color according to ABYC color codes.

Seahorse..... Of course you are correct. I have no idea why I typed in the color red, especially when I have a tach sitting right in front of me. Just one of those senior moments we hear about I guess. I edited and corrected that color goof above from red to blue. Thanks for the memory jog.

Re: where do you connect the volt tac?

The tournament ski boats i used to drive used twin airguide speedos.

The are accurate, but a bit temperamental. They can get clogged up with weed, etc, and have to be cleaned regularly.

Also, we used to have to calibrate them daily using a stop watch in the slalom course.

16.08 seconds at 36 mph. I still remember ;o)

I use the speed function on my GPS unit on my fishing boat now. It is very accurate, and maintenance free ;o)

Steviecops, you said the GPS units are accurate. More accurately put, they are dead on accurate to within a 10th of a mph. They are amazing little pieces of equipment. I love them!
