where does the gray wire attach and what is it for?

'72 Johnson 100hp (100esl72r) There is a gray wire that exits the main harness in the motor and dangles near the terminal block. The boat has a tach but it doesn't seem to be working. Could the gray wire be for the tach? Where should it attach to the terminal block?

Connects to the yellow/Gray wire of the stator/rectifier terminal. If no Yellow/Gray wire but rather both wires of stator/rectifer are Yellow, connect the Gray wire to either of the Yellow wire terminals.
