I have the exhaust cover and the head off my 1995 25hp johnson. If I remove the lower unit and shine a flashlight on the water tube upper inlet will I be able the see where it enters. I think there is a piece of the old upper water tube washer in there

I retired in 1991 so I don't know exactly how your water tube is designed, bent, whatever... but it is very unlikely you'll be able to see a light beam in that manner. However, having been down that path a few times... a piece of impeller missing and nowhere to be found... only one place for it to go... up that tube. A piece of strong wire such as the inner cable of a old throttle or shift cable with a slight hook in the end of it usually does the job.

You can also a high setting of pressurized air in the water passageways of the exhaust baffle system that you have exposed to back flush the water route. Wish'ya luck.

I will give that a try. I have exhaust smoke coming out of the telltale. It is a new water pump rebuild. I can squirt water up thetube and it comes out the telltale. I spun the driveshaft with a drill and water came out the water tube grommet. When i put it together nothing but smoke. No water. The son started without water and i think he fried the impeller. He took it out on the lake and it overheated. head gasket looked ok but i will change anyway. exhaust side gasket not so good. Waiting on gaskets so i thought i would look for the piece of washer. I really appreciate the help. i have the repair manual but it lacks a lot. thanks again

With the rig in the water, of course the water is at the proper level.

On a flushette, on that model, the flushette can work itself off when the water is full "ON" but I'm sure you're aware of that.

In a tank... a large plastic trash can is my choice... the water must be 3" or 4" above the actual water pump as the pump IS NOT self priming.

Sons do things like that... and we forgive them. When mine was very young, the year being about 1972, and many small boats had a rubber cap push button on the dash to start the engine... and I had just installed a new water pump assy on one and it was waiting in my driveway for the owner, my son (5 years old at the time) climbed in the rig and pushed that button (sigh). One of the blessings of being a father? :)

It is a lot easier to forgive a 5year old than a 36 year old that should know better lol. This model has a one piece lower cowl. Does anyone know how many bolts to pull the powerhead. The repair manual I have goes into detail about powerhead removal on the model with a split lower cowl but not the one piece cowl. I want to do a good job replacing the head and exhaust gaskets and it looks pretty hard to do with the powerhead in place 1995 johnson 25hp j25teleor

Yow!... 37 years old huh? Is he familiar with the TV series "The 70's Show", and what Red Foreman calls his son, Eric? :)

The water tube must be in the grommet of the exhaust adapter first.-----Then the lower unit is installed.-----I do think you need to worry about a washer here at all !!-----I think about 4 bolts and a couple of nuts hold the powerhead onto the exhaust housing.
