Serial numbers are used to find part. etc. for Merc outboards. The stripe will only ID a range of years and the style of the stripe changes.

My '82 has a blue stripe, the '85 has a brown stripes, and the '86 has silver/grey stripes, the old '60's red stripe is on the junk pile up at the farm.

For what its worth, year of manufacture is most accurately determined by the serial number.

The 68 and 69 are best looking, with 70 and 71 coming in second

found it it has a blue stripe and is serial no.4425027 and it came with two lower ends neither one turns.

With out knowing the HP the serial number may or may not be useful

FWIW, a variety of Blue stripes were used from 1972 through 1983.
