Raise engine up; look on inside of left transom bracket, should be on a tag there.

i cannot find the model # anywhere. i called my local omc dealer and they stated it may be inside the engine bay....looked everywhere inside there as well. Its not like this engine is all covered with grease/dirt and i can not see it either. Anyone

seems someone has removed the plate for the model/serial #. I guess now im afraid the motor may be hot. I do have a bill of sale from the fellow. Maybe it just fell off in the water.

Is there another way of telling the model/serial of this engine?

Look for an aluminum casting plug on the top of the block. model identification 2.jpg Painted over, but may have some useful info, see pic.
About the size of a quarter.

I just picked up an old 77' starcraft holiday with an 85 Evinrude. The casted engine parts have part numbers on everything, ie heads, crankcase, jugs. Would it be possible for the OP to find a part only used on that year then cross reference?

Checking part numbers is sort of a last resort. Many of the part numbers were used over a number of models and years. (heads, power packs, flywheels, etc.) With lack of any real identifying info, it's a good place to start-but does get confusing with part number spanning a few years. Also, pictures of the engine and esp the cowling (paint, decals, color) are helpful if the engine has the original cowling and paint scheme.

Looks like the motor was rebuilt one time with 0.030" pistons.---And yes likely an 86 model.

The grey Johnson lower color may have been in 1984. The cowling itself looks like an 86. The lower color in 86 was the same white as the cowling, so something is still not matching.
