where is the seriel # at?

I am working on a merury 500 50hp outboard. There is no tag with seriel # and model # on it. I take it that it is a merc 500 is the model #. Where can I find the seriel #?

mine is on the bracket where the motor bolts to the transom.

Depending on the year, check the block carefully for a stenciled number on the top in the back or on each side on a boss. Also some years had a small circular aluminum plate insert on the side.

If you can post a photo and assuming the decals are correct, some here could get close.

thank you both. I found it under the engine. on the top of the transome clamp. Now where can I go to find the year of it?
