I am new to boating ( and outboard motors )!
Is there any URL that display outboard motor
schematics and cutaway diagrams explainging how
these things operate?

I haven't a clue to what I have here except that
it appears to be a Johnson 1973 50hp outboard 2 cycle
( oil / gas mix ) motor. ( 50ESL73R what ever that means ). Is this mixure set up
a good or bad thing? My wife bought this boat.
( A 1973 Terry Bass, last manufacutred in 1983 )
Now I have to be her captain :D

How do these things work? What do I need to know?
Does this thing need oil? What kind of maint.
schedule should I perform for best results?

Label me dumb as the rocks I hit as I learn
how to dock this 14foot fiberglass honey.

Hi Steve..I have almost an identical setup...a 73 14ft Ouachita (Terry Bass copy) with a '73 Evinrude (same as your Johnson). It is a really neat boat, and my engine for its age runs really good. I have the original shop manual; if you need help, I can be of assistance.

As for how these things work, get any 2-cycle oil that is TC-W3 certified, and mix one pint per six gallons. Just pour it in the bottom of the tank and add 6 gal gas. Foolproof. As for maintenance, do you know when the water pump was last changed? That is a yearly maintenance item, as well as spark plugs. I also had a fuel line crack on mine, so check your black rubber hoses under the cowl for cracks.

Is the motor running as-is?

Hi Evin. Thank you for the reply. It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on things. ( Is the Ouachita your first boat? )

Thanks for the tip on the water pump. This uses a water pump hu? I'll have to try and find that.

I hear that those shop manuals are a pretty penny too! I am getting my Johnson as is ( from my son in law ( a very responsable guy ). A 14 ft fiberglass Terry with the 50hp Johnson, foot controlled trolling motor, depth finder, trailer, and new battery.

Where are you boating? I live along the Mississippi River where it connects to the Rock River in Illinois and am looking forward to alot of exploring! It's nice to know you are happy with your setup. Thank you for the gas/mix info!

Hi Cockbilled

Congrats on the boat! On to the questions. What is the history of this motor? Has it been sitting for a long time or run regularly? Any maintenence done in the past year? Trailer and tires in good shape? Any info you have will give us a better start at helping you get on the water without problems. We need to know what and what has not been done to the motor, so we can advise you of what you need to take care of before you venture out. And yes, those manuals are expensive, but very nessesary for service and getting to know the motor. If you don't have a Dealer near you to pick one up(And make it the Factory Manual. Not generic), you can order one at the link below. Let us know anything you can...

Johnson Factory Manuals

Thank you Rick. I plan on picking it up this weekend.

Believe me, I will post anything I can think of as soon as I know more because I do NOT want to be stranded in the middle of the mighty Mississippi with summer barge traffic.

Thanks! :)
