Hello folks, I finally recived my Seloc repair manual I begain reading the lower unit specs for the gear case shimming. It explains the procecure for setting up backlash and shaft endplay (Drive shaft and prop shaft). The only problem with this book is that it is very vague on some of these proceduers and there are limited pictures to show tools and parts being assembled.

For example, it mentions a pinon gear shim but no where in the text it tell you where it's positioned on the shaft, the picture diagrams don't show it either! The only shim that is on the drive shaft is the one at the top part of the shaft on the upper shaft bearing and the picture diagram says its a SHIM not a PINION GEAR SHIM. Uhgg!!! Can any one tell me whats up with that!

I would like to set this thing up the according to specs but it is frustrating having to guess what it is I need to do. I replaced all the bearings and prop shaft hub so it need to be set up right. Can anyone help!

What engine???? DF70 ? On a df70 the upper shim is your pinion gear shim. You need a special tool. A suzuki Shimming gauge. You use the drive shaft oil seal housing and the shim that sits under it to get the proper shim spacing. With out the tool you are just "going by feel" Put it together and take it a part and hope for the best.

If it is their it will be between the gear and the driveshaft I, would not try it though, you should have "special" tools.

Sorry Guys I didnt mention the engine I thought I did, Oops! Yes it is a DF70 1999 year mod.

Jeffersondodson the inner pinion gear is beveled and so is the shaft it also has splines inside the gear and on shaft, there's no flat surface for a shim at the pinion end of the shaft. Thats why I was confused. The only shim is toward the upper half of the shaft where Inducted Master Chief mentioned.

Thanks Master Chief I think your right. The book nore the parts break down (diagram) indicate this, it's just indicated as a shim not a pinion shim. Details details details! There is a shim that sits under the oil seal drive shaft housing. Thanks gentlmen for responding, if you have any more feedback it would be great!
