We are going to be rebuilding the gunnel boards, I went and got 5 yards of white marine vinyl from Joanns for 34 bucks. If anyone needs some vinyl go to joanns and see if they have coupons by the register. The coupon I had was 50% off any non sale item, and marine vinyl is a non sale item.
I grabbed another coupon on my way out and it is for oct 18-22, and another oct 23-24 both 50% off.

Ok now onto my question. PO had cotton batting behind the gunwale board, we would like something that does not soak up water. I tried looking for pink sheet foam from lowes, and lowes does not carry it in my area.

Tried HD, Joanns, Michaels, flooring store.

Where are you guys buying this stuff?

I think there was a thread here about foam a couple of weeks ago, but not sure it was closed cell? Several guys were buying on Ebay. Seems the price was reasonable.

It's gunwale, I think.

Good luck.

Foam from Lowes, is that the rigid insulation or or flexible foam? I think I've seen the flexible foam in the flooring section, used as underlayment for prefinished wood flooring.

How thick of foam are you looking for, how big of pieces? You could pick up a couple sleeping bag pads from WalMart (about 1/2" thick) that would provide some nice padding. I think they are about 6' long and 3' wide.

(I wouldn't use rigid foam, if it gets bumped or banged it will dent and show through the vinyl)

Yeah I thought of sleeping bag pads, def not rigid foam. I was just wondering if people here were getting it somewhere cheaper.

Are you making the panels that go from the gunnels down to the deck, or combing pads that are attached to the gunnels (kind of like bumpers)?

You might look at pads for exercising. They are generally closed cell and come in sheets, are cheap and available everywhere.
