Where to buy cylinder head?

As I posted in my other thread, I think my #2 spark plug hole is stripped out. What would be the best plan of action, to do a heli coil? (Which I have ever done) Or just buy a new head? If I need a new head, where can I buy one? Thanks

I think I'd try the Heli coil first. I've seen them last for a long time and it would be cheaper for you. The top post on this page is the "Top Secret" file where you can find a listing of salvage companies that would have a new head for your motor if you decide to go that route.

If you're not too sure of your heli-coil skills, a machine shop will do it fairly cheaply. Call some shops in your area. An auto machine shop could do it as easily as a marine shop.

Put in a heli coil and use jb weld around the outside. Make sure you tap the new thread at EXACTLY 90 degrees to the cylinder head. Do not buy a new head this works just fine. Get the actual thread insert and not the coil kind.

The heli-coil kit is rather expensive for a one shot deal. Take it to a marine dlr or else a machine shop.

I had the misfortion of striping a spark plug thread. I removed the cyclinder head and repaired it with save-a-thread repair kit and locktite red threadlock. Simple fix. It's only been one season, but so far no problems.

Re: Where to buy cylinder head?

Thanks for the info. Another question involving cleaning the surface where the head meets the block. It has a lot of crud on the block. I'm going to have machine shop clean up the head. I thought about taking a very fine grit sand paper but I don't want to scratch the surface. Also, how do I keep all the crud out of the cylinders? Thanks

I didn't touch the engine block as mine was pretty clean. I assume you need to clean off some old gasket material or sealer? I've seen gasket remover at auto stores, but personally never tried it. I would stuff some clean rags in the cylinders to catch any debris. But letting a shop do the job may be the way to go if you feel uncomfortable with this.

I repaired the stripped spark plug hole with save-a-thread and Locktite red. Cleaned up the cylinder head and cover (the cover had some old gasket and that was time consuming to scrape off). Then did the figure 8 trick on the cylinder head on a sheet of glass with 150 grit sand paper. Installed new tstat, cover gasket, head gasket and water pump kit. Torqued the cylinder head to spec and re-torqued it after a I ran it a while. I'm sure others will have different opinions, but my motor ran great all season so I'm happy. Can't wait til spring. Here's my old thread for reference. Hope this helps. Btw, I'm enjoying your rebuild thread. hang in there! -jasper

Re: Where to buy cylinder head?

I can offer this advice on what not to do, Don't use a zizz wheel ( abrasive fiber disc on an air grinder) regardless of grit coarseness as it simply removes too much material too quickly and unevenly...nearly impossible not to "dip" out some. I've read of using a well sharpened wood chisel and carefully removing the gasket material...just don't gouge the block deck. I think I'll give that spray gasket remover a try as well. Patience is a virtue while working on these motors.
