so im going to install a bilge pump but where to put the exit as you can see in the pic the little black hole just beside the outboard is a little drain area for what i dont know but what i do know is if i get a decent wave from the back i definately get water in but it doesnt get in the boat because of the design so i have the little top corner in the back which would be very tight or on the side what does everyone think sorry for the link for the life of me cant remember how to resize it

Go as high as you can, but don't get yourself in a position where you've drilled a hole, and can't thread the thru hull into place, and route the plumbing. Other consideration(s) is/are the more bends in the bilge tubing, and the longer the tubing, the less efficiently the pump will move water.

As long as you have the exit well above the highest expected waterline you will be fine. Like soggy stated make sure you can access the back side to connect hose and install nuts.

I would put it on the side of the hull about even with or just above the grab handles on the transom and maybe 6"-12" forward of the transom.
waves rarely crash against the side of a boat but often do on the transom.... being on the side you prevent having a tiny amount of water come in with each wave or wake when beached, docked, drifting, whatever.
I'd also put it on the right side so you can see if it is discharging from the helm.

Hello Brianis,

I don't have a bilge installed yet but I have the exit port on my boat where one was once connected and that is where I am going to reconnect mine once I get it installed.

Here is a picture to give you an idea:

I hope that this helps :)

Good luck!

kinda hard to see in the pic but that looks like a fuel tank vent to me.

Usually the bilge port is on the other side and is plastic. It isn't quite flush with the hull but it tries to be and is open to the air no cover. Based on the pic I agree that looks more like a fuel tank vent those usually are stainless, covered and usually have a small mesh inside or covering the opening to prevent as much as it can water entering or nesting insects as well.

Do ya have a pic of the inside of the transom where that "drain" hole is ?

If you have the space to install a through hull fitting there and bilge hose ( which should be Looped above the through hull fitting before the connection ) then go for the trans hole.

I doubt your going to take on hardly any water off of a transom bilge fitting.

Basically put your through hull fitting in the closest most convenient spot to your pump mount. Stbd side..port side..transom .. it does not really matter one way or another as long as the discharge is Routed properly.

Why do you want to install a bilge pump system on your boat ? Just wondering and not wishing to create an argument .. just curious ..

Ditto, thats a fuel supply vent.

Op, mount your exit a couple feet forward of the stern on the side as already said. It should be mounted so it will not be under water if the boat has taken on water. Having a back-up is also a good idea, thou you are dealing with a smaller vessel.

Shouldn't matter if the waves hit a thru hull, because your hose should have a loop or come in and be mounted up higher than your thru hull fitting. Do it right and get the proper bilge pump and hose. base your size pump considering the run and any lift it might need to pump up to.

The drain hole right next to the outboard is for the Splashwell...the purpose is exactly as you figured, when you slow down quickly, or are beached and a wave washes in there, instead of the water going into the boat and down into the bilge, it comes out that drain...

I agree, if you are going to install a bilge pump, two things, make sure you can get to the inside to make your connnections, and the second, even though it is personal preference where you mount the drain outlet...it is usually better if you can mount it on the helm side of the boat, that way whenever it is on you can actually just look over your shoulder and see that it is working...

As far as photobucket picture posting, let me see if this helps...

Go to your Photobucket...

When you click to look at your picture, there should be a bar of choices just under the picture that says something to the effect of..."Share,Edit,Delete,Move"...pick "Edit"...you can then manipulate the picture and save a copy...then when you are ready to post it here on Iboats...hit the "Go Advanced" button when you are going to reply...click the IMG code under the photobucket picture, it will light up, right click your mouse, choose "copy"...come back to your iboats reply...place the cursor where you want, right click your mouse, choose "Paste", and the image code should appear in your reply...scroll down on your reply to where it says "Preview Post"...that will show you what your post is going to look like, If you are happy with it, then click "Submit Reply"...Done, easy, right???...
Hope this helps...
