Where to find engine serial number?

Hi! I recently purchased a 1979 18' Cobalt. I believe it has a Ford 302 block, and the outdrive is a Mercruiser with an "888" label on it. My insurance agent wants an engine serial number, but I cannot find it anywhere. He probably wants the outdrive serial also, and I haven't been able to find that either. Any suggestions on where to look for these numbers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Matt,<br /><br />The leg (outdrive) serial number if not on the rear decal, will be under the decal on the port side of the leg. You're looking for a 7 digit number. <br /><br />The engine serial number is on the decal on the rocker cover, if it's not there then look at the rear top of the cylinder block between the intake manifold and the flywheel housing, also 7 digits. <br /><br />I have pictures if you need them.<br /><br />Chris..............

Chris,<br /><br />Pictures would be most helpful. I don't recall seeing a decal on the port side, but I could well be wrong. Pics of where to look on the engine would also be most helpful.<br /><br />Thanks for the quick reply. It's cool to see the overseas participation on this forum! Hey Chris,<br /><br />OK, my outdrive has the "888" on the label, but no box for a serial number on the label. I haven't had to to get out to the boat, but my wife was out there today. I asked her about the label on the port side of the drive, and she said there was a label there. I asked if she could peel it back, and she said that she could not without destroying the label. My question is... do we need to destroy the label, or is there anyplace else to look?<br /><br />As for the motor, I'll check that myself next time I'm out there, though it may be difficult to get to. Thanks again for your help.
