Where to Find Model Number?

I'm trying to detirmine the year of my outboard, it's a Johnson 28 SPL and seems to be from the mid to late 80's. I can't seem to find the model number anywhere on it though. If the number is on the exterior, it will be impossible to find because it has been repainted by the guy before me, and he did a pretty sloppy job of it. I've tried using the welch plug number to get somewhere by calling Bombraider, but they couldn't tell me the year.

Re: Where to Find Model Number?

Shouild be a plate on the port (left) transom bracket, or a decal at the top portion of the steering swivel bracket between the swivel bracket and the engine's exhaust housing (the long hsg between the powerhead and the lower unit).

If either of those items exist, try to carefully clean off the paint without damaging the plate/decal.

Re: Where to Find Model Number?

I looked in both places and saw nothing. The paint is so thick that it's impossible to see anything beneath it. Is there any other way of knowing what year the engine is?

Would it help if I were to post pics?

That along with the #'s you found on the welch plug may help someone to narrow it down.

AJ what are the #s fromthe welch plug. be careful not to confuse 3,8, 9, 0. they can be hard to distinguish.

Re: Where to Find Model Number?

I see you've posted this question before AJ.....As has been posted, the model number would be on a plate on the port transom bracket. If it has been painted over, you should still be able to see the plate if it's still there. If it is, scrape the paint off and look for the model number.

If the plate is missing, Dhadley suggested in your last thread to call BRP and see if they can convert the number. Do you have any type of title for the engine or other paper work that may help?

AJ its time to start scraping the transom mount. when you find the plate, use sand paper the paint will stay in the stamped numbers .

Re: Where to Find Model Number?

Sorry for not posting in such a long time, been really busy.
I see no indication of no plate of any kind anywhere on the transom mount. I have no paperwork on the motor. When I called BRP a while ago, they couldn't tell me anything about it.
When I bought the motor from my marine mechanic, he could only tell me that it was mid to late 80's.
