Where to get parts?

Does anybody know where at on the net I can find used parts for a 77 merc 500? The only piece I need is the little round piece of metal that fits in the middle of the choke solenoid, it moves up and down inside the solenoid opening and closing the choke plates on the carbs. Anybody have any idea where to look for this at? I've searched ebay for 2 weeks, checked with the local boat shop, just running out of options and would like to get this motor together so I can take it out. Thanks

Cat, You could always fabricate one out of a short thick bolt.

They should be very common to most of the merc's before 1980 or so.

Re: Where to get parts?

I would be curious to know why you needed another one unless you lost the original as there is not much to go wrong with the core in an electromagnet.
The core...."the piece that moves" will be made of solid metal or maybe powered iron and if the windings are not shorted in the electromagnet the core should move when the windings are energized.
If you have a core and it does not work it does not seem likely that a different one would react any differently unless the one you have is physically broken.Ron Gordon

RD, I had just bought the motor a few weeks ago, from an individual that had no clue what general maintenance was or how to work on an engine. The part was gone and that is why I'm looking for the replacement. Thanks Guys for all the help. Maybe one of these days I'll get this thing done.

Sometimes the piece the connects the plunger to the carb linkage breaks. This happened to me last year.

Try www.oldmercs.com they have a bunch of parts and if it isn't listed just email or call them. They are the only place I have found parts for my 1958 kiekhaefer 58A.
