Where to get spark plugs?

I have a 1981 60HP 2 Cylinder Johnson Sea Horse.<br /><br />The current spark plugs are NGK B9HS-10.<br /><br />Can I get these at somewhere like Advanced Auto Parts or Autozone? Or will I have to order them from a marine parts store like West Marine?<br /><br />I noticed West Marine has a NGK BR9HS-10 is that the same as the NGK B9HS-10?<br /><br />What other brand/model spark plug or model of NGK can I use on my outboard? <br /><br />Any information would be greatly appreciated.<br /><br />Thanks :)

Use only Champions in JohnnyRudes.<br /><br />Get them at NAPA.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

Thanks, the NGK's were already in the outboard when I bought it.<br /><br />Its a new season so I figured I would change them. <br /><br />You wouldn't happen to know the model number of the Champion spark plugs I would need? I haven't gotten my new manual yet and I would like to get my boat out on the water soon.<br /><br />Thanks again :)

I don't have a NAPA store near me.<br /><br />Auto Zone has Champion plugs. I crossed referenced the NGK B9HS-10 and found:<br /><br />Champion Spark Plug<br />Stock Number: 821<br />Part Number: L77JC4<br /><br />Is that the correct spark plug for my outboard?<br /><br />Thanks again :)

Good up-to-date chart here: Spark Plug Chart <br />I find that my local auto parts store keeps these (QL77JC4)in stock.

Some references say to get the L77JC4 and some say to get the QL77JC4.<br /><br />What is the difference and which should I use?<br /><br />I researched online and most said to get the L77JC4. <br /><br />I looked up my outboard model in a catalog for Champion spark plugs at my local auto part store and it said to get the Champion L77JC4. <br /><br />I purchased two of them. Should I take them back and get the QL77JC4 spark plugs?<br /><br />Thanks again :)

I was going to get some new plugs but ran across champion's website. they show stainless steel plugs (the website states a stainless steel shell) for my motor<br /><br />1992 Johnson 90<br />Champion # 5931 gap .030<br /><br />I've seen other people recommend<br />QL77JC4 gap .030<br /><br />wouldn't I want to get the (more expensive) Stainless plugs?

rkhanso <br /><br />Not nessesary to get the stainless plugs. Just get the QL77JC4's and gap them at .040. If your motor is running good, they will at least last you a season. I,and others here, have found that the wider gap of .040 allows the motor to run better at idle and lower speeds. This was the original recommended gap some years ago. I have always stuck with it and it does make a difference in low speed operation. Much smoother!

I purchased the L77JC4's last night because many resources said to get them.<br /><br />My local auto part store doesn't carry the stainless steel model. I plan on changing the spark plugs every season so it doesn't matter I suppose.<br /><br />I did a little research on the QL77JC4 verses the L77JC4 in reference to the resistor in the QL77JC4. A website stated that the resistor is to limit the amount of Ohms at 10,000. The reason the website gave for the resistor is to reduce static on radios. I don't use any radios when my engine is running so I figured I didn't need the QL77JC4.<br /><br />Is there any other advantages to using the QL77JC4 with resistor verses the L77JC4?<br /><br />Thanks again :)

As you said, the "Q" is designed to eliminate interference in radios and other eletronics that you may run on the boat, including Fishfinders, Ect. L77JC4's will work fine if you do not have any electronics installed. But why not just get the QL77JC4's and be done with it. Heck, even Walmart sells them...

I bought the L77JC4 spark plugs last night before I read Hooty's explaination of the differences between the QL77JC4 and the L77JC4. If I saw it before I went to the store I would have bought the QL77JC4.<br /><br />I'll buy the QL77JC4 the next time I change my plugs.<br /><br />Is the stock gap on these plugs .030? I read some posts on here that said to use .040?<br /><br /> :)

Gap at .040 for better low speed and idle operation... Will not affect high speed operation. Read my previous post above...

Sorry I did read that previously. I was refering to your post and several others I read.<br /><br />I'm not too familiar with setting a spark plug gap. If the stock on the plugs I bought is .030 I will try that first. Then I will do some research on setting a proper gap.<br /><br />I have a gap tool but I never did it before.
