I am originally from NW Ohio and there we had the lovely Lake Erie. On lake erie there was an island called Put in Bay and it was a BLAST. I'm wondering if there is anywhere similar in the south jersey waters. It was basically a shopping/bars island with golf carts ...etc. Thanks for help! (or any hot spot recommendations would be GREAT)

I do not know of anyplace like what you have described. Atlantic city has some marinas, and of course the casinos. Red Bank has a town located on the North Branch of the Shrewsbury River (comonly known as the Navesink). These is a stretch of the Shrewsbury river that has some resturants and bars in Sea Bright/Monmouth Beach section. There are a couple of resturants on Barnegat Bay, as well as a great anchorage with a walkway to the Ocean.

I don't recall any freshwater places in south Jersey. It's mainly a saltwater environment. As stated above Barnegat Bay good. Anywhere on the coast for surf fishing and numerous charter/head boats to choose from especially in Cape May. You might want to do a search for a fishing pier, if fishing is slow, you can always catch a sight on the beach:cool:.

What is Barnegat Bay like? Depth, smooth or rough? Any place to beach for the afternoon and hang out?

I'm a Lake Erie transplant from South Jersey. Sommers Point area. The Barnegat inlet can be pretty hairy depending on the size of your boat due to breakers. You also have to watch out for shoals. Same with Brigantine which is a litttle south. I don't remember being able to beach the boat and get out like you can out here. Thats why i miss the eastcoast for fishing but i love the great lakes for partying and just cruising around if you want to beach the boat.

If you're on the salt water side, there's a sand bar in Hereford's Inlet (just north of Wildwood) that's a good place to beach the boat and hang out but early this summer it was closed due to some mating birds. I haven't tried it since May tho so it may be open now. You'll also want a chart of the inlet as it's kinda tricky sometimes. There are plenty of bars and resturants on the water in Wildwood as well but the crowd in town is too young for my taste.

If you're on the freshwater side, there's the Delaware River. In my area, there's a small island just south of the shipyard in Philly and Penn's Landing and a couple restaurants north of the shipyard on the Philly side.

What area are you in?

also lookup Island Beach State Park and Tice's Shoal. Great spot to anchor, party, swim or walk over to the ocean.
