I just got a CDI rect/reg #194-5279. I have an 88' V6 Black Max. Where have any of you mounted this in the past? Don't want to be drilling holes where I shouldn't be.
Thanks-
Andy

Just read your other post
if the stator/rectifier kit dosen't cure it
it maybe the switchbox

as for drilling holes NO use an existing one

you may have to mout it on an existing piece of real estate and find long bolts to accomoodate both/one component

It's not the switchbox for it is not connected to the battery nor rectifier. I'm almost 100% confident the rect/reg in one will be the cure. I read about 30 posts today on batteries and battery charging. I have dieHard Deep cycle. They have too thin of plates to be able to regulate an unregulated system and hence I'm getting the 17+ volts.

Thanks for the mounting info. I will search for existing holes.

-thanks
andy

Reg/rec generate heat, so make sure you mount the metal back solid flat against a cold metal framing somewhere and use heat sink on the back.

Jerry

Re: Where to Mount a CDI/Rapir rect/reg

I've mounted a 194-5279 on my '86 175 where the old regulator was using a 1/4" aluminum plate. I use the old reg tapped mounting holes to mount the plate. 1 of the tapped holes will be under the new reg so I countersunk it and used a flat-head screw. I tapped holes in the plate and ran 6/32 screws up to make mounting studs for the new reg. Will send pictures if you need them.

DasBot-
Do you have those pics? Are there any good stops on the powerhead or ignition plate that acts has a heat sink? Or should I mount a piece of aluminum in the old rectifier mounting holes and then mount the CDI 194-5279 on that.

-Thanks
Andy

Sorry busy week-end will get pictures soon. Mount the new unit where the old regulator was, it won't fit in the space that the rectifier takes up.

Re: Where to Mount a CDI/Rapir rect/reg

I never had a regulator (hopefully the mounting holes for it are there? do you think?). I always just had a 9 amp stator, which means I only needed a rectifier. Now because of overcharging issues with my new CDI/Rapair stator I bought their rect/reg # 194-5279. If I don't have the tapped holes where the regulator would be, what should I do?. Can I mount a peice of aluminum using the tapped holes for the rectifier. Then use some self-tapping screws to mount the CDI rect/reg onto the aluminum.

Out of curiosity, where did you purchase the aluminum? Junk Yark?

-thanks
andy

Mine is a 50hp and I was able to mount the CDI reg/rec in the same spot where the old rec was. Holes aligned perfectly. I would imagine that CDI engineered it that way.

Jerry

It will mount behind the flywheel!
That is where the stock regulator would be installed on a V6 black max if it was needed at manufacture.......

KCLOST-
Thanks for the info. Should I still mount it to a 1/4'' thick piece of aluminum for a heat sink.

thanks-
andy

P.S. After reading tons of posts (with you as a main poster) on weather the temp sensor is reading metal temps or water temps. And if it is reading metal temps what are good temps for WOT. Well I'm in your boat, ~200-215 at WOT

Re: Where to Mount a CDI/Rapir rect/reg

It will not hurt at all, but I don't think it is needed.... It will be only partially in contact with the outer surface of a water jacket... The aluminum piece will not do much to ensure more cooling in my opinion... The unit should be designed to handle the heat.

The location is right behind the flywheel and even more specifically right behind the water jacket plug... There should be a couple of holes there, one of them actually has a metal protrusion that was molded into the block. The unit will not be in full contact with the block... Only about 25% of it will. (you will see what I mean)...
This is all dependent on the unit you have obviously whether or not it will match up..

Here is a picture of my "stock" regulator location,

How big are the orignal tapped holes for the regulator and how far can you sink a bolt into it. I got a 5/16" thick piece of aluminum and have the holes drilled to mount the rect/reg. I just need to know what length and size of the screws that go into the tapped holes at the engine. I know the holes (for the factory regulator) are separated by 2.25 inches.

-thanks
andy

Re: Where to Mount a CDI/Rapir rect/reg

How the heck did you counter sink the mounting screws for the rect/reg to the aluminum plate. Since the mounting holes for the plate (old regulator holes) are going to be under the new rect/reg...you have to mount the aluminum plate to the powerhead and then the rect/reg to the plate. How do you hold the bottom side of the counter sinked screws, is there clearance?

-andy

Re: Where to Mount a CDI/Rapir rect/reg

Yes the plate goes on first. I tapped the plate (1/4-20 I think) for the reg mounting studs and tightend them into place with some loctite red. I used roundhead stainless for studs and there was plenty of room for the heads. A little heatsink grease or silicone dielectric grease between the plate and new reg should help w/ heat transfer.
Been running mine 2 years now with no problems.

Re: Where to Mount a CDI/Rapir rect/reg

Got the new rect/reg mounted and wired up... no overcharging, PERFECT!!!

Only problem is, I went to test it at WOT and after 2500-3000 RPM's my engine just rev'd high with no increase in speed. Just my luck, spun prop. It's always something with the joyful world of boating. Fortunately it wasn't fully spun as I was able to get my self home at 1000 RPM's.

-Thanks for all the help everyone.
andy
